The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

LOL ... yeah and if 4 crates containing 2 cats and 5 bantam chickens take up the whole designated pet bay on one plane, not sure where they would put the elephant

NFC My older sister brought home a canary(on the bus) that she bought at a "Dime Store." You can see this goes back quite a long time. She named him Gabby and he was the sweetest thing. He'd eat ice cream or banana off a finger tip. If you put your hand in the cage he'd jump on and sit there a long time if you wanted him too. He was also a great singer.
He also let us hold him.

My sister took care of him for about a month and then got bored, so I took over. We had him about a year. My friend Pamela came over (a parakeet person). She shoved her hand in the cage, he flew around wildly , and grabbed him. The next day he was listless and died. Add Pamela to my black list along with Kathy.

My sister bought another canary, Junior. He never got tamed and had a choppy kind of song. He never liked us and I think he died for spite. Funny that my parents let her get a second bird after she had gotten bored with the first one. Guess who took care of him too.

Your bird keeping experiences go back a ways DD.

Now you have me thinking about dime stores. When I was in junior high (middle school to some), there was a dime store with a soda fountain in it right on the walk home from school. I suppose we were a pain to the people that worked there, but we had a lot of fun in that dime store. Ah, good old days!

As promised here are our babies. The Bourkes are fat as puddings and still can't sit up properly or even hold their heads up for more than a moment. Their wing feathers are starting to sprout.

The finches are ready to take off and some of them did this morning. One made it up to the high perch at the back of the aviary. But they were very easy to pick up and return to their box, a good reason to handle them as they are used to us. They all have names now which is always fatal!!!

Scully and Leanna (let's hope it's a girl)

Teila, stay cool! That is extreme heat.

J, I just love those little Bourkes!

The Finches are really growing, are those their permanent feather color or will they change some more?

Thank you so much for sharing your babies with us, I've really enjoyed seeing them!

The finches should stay the colours they are. Our younger finch babies look like they'll have lots of white on them, just like their parents. I'm sure I'll have lots more photos to share, though I may be a bit busy when I'm hand feeding the bourkes. When they are about 2 weeks old is a good time to start so this time next week I will have hopefully started feeding them. I'm going to feel a bit mean stealing Pinkie's babies but it turns them into amazing pets and it shouldn't be long before she's sitting on another clutch of eggs. It sounds like by the time the first lot of chicks are leaving the nest the hen is already sitting on the next lot of eggs.

How's your hubby's foot? I hope he's starting to feel better.

You must be up early - it's late here (for me anyway). I really must get to bed or I'll be a grumpy mother tomorrow.

Thanks for asking about DH...he's doing pretty well. He's now off his pain meds which I think is really good seeing how the surgery was just this past Tuesday. He still has to have his foot elevated most the day but yesterday he felt good enough to go for a short car ride down to the golf course to help me check on the 3 cats that hang out there.

I am up extra early this morning. Last night I fell asleep on the couch and woke up with Opie walking back & forth on my chest. Had to get up in self defense, lol. That little guy is a handful but I sure love him (and the other 2 also of course, but Opie is my baby).
