The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Happy Friday all (unless it happens to be Saturday for a couple of you, and then it's Happy Saturday)!

@CntryBoy777 I remember you, glad to have you over on this side of things! What sort of new birds are you looking to get in the spring? You can come hang out here any time you want, we mostly don't bite :D

@Teila I'm sorry you won't have Omu (AKA: Sweet Cheeks) as your own but how nice for you to have a new friend in your new hometown:thumbsup And she has fish ponds too, that will be fun for both of you. Has she met your chooks yet?

@JaeG they need to get you a new fridge. Do you want us to start a petition or have a talk with them?

@DigMyChicks what's going on in your world today? I'm about ready to re-home a cat or two...are you up for some more? Three (3!) times last night as I was trying to get to sleep Opie and Pip knocked over their waterer. It's one of those things where you fill the tank and it empties into a bowl as the water level gets low. Don't know what inspired them to play with it, they never have before, little freaks. :he I finally took it away and just left them with a bowl of water.
I don't know why cats insist on testing gravity all the time! Mine knocked my new nasal spray on the floor before i even used it! I think they view every raised surface as their own personal highway. Therefore they must keep it all clear. And of course, every new item must be investigated and tested! Maybe they are all small scientists from another planet!

I have never raised them, tho I grew up having guineas. I posted some questions on the Guinea Talk thread so I could get an idea of the scope of the challenge with 15-20 at one time....but, I will use the MHP as I did with the ducks and chicks and will use again with them in the Spring. I learned quite a bit with that first brooding, especially about the ducks....they outgrew my setup after just 3wks and it was a rush to get them outside....there were 12 of them, and they grew inches overnite. So, I'm going to work on an expandable brooder that can be extended and expanded, then collapsed for storage...or maintain a base unit that has the expansion capabilities....I have an idea, but that can also be Dangerous....
I'll brood the ducks and geese together and the chicks separate....hopefully, both will be outside by the time the keets arrive. We have 20acres here, so space for guineas won't be an issue....we are looking to add a couple of goats to the herd next Spring too....and getting a GSD in December, so gonna be a busy, busy time here at the Lazy A** Acres....:)

Lots of things coming up for you, that's exciting! Interesting about the ducks outgrowing the MHP so quickly. What breed are you planning on getting this time?

I prefer raising guineas with chickens as guineas really need to be taught everything! I could not find chicks locally to raise with mine, so i ended up buying 3 young chickens locally. Bad idea, they were sick and 2 died. The last one is not growing so i think it may be mixed with bantam. Anyway, these are by far the stupidest guineas i have ever had .

Sorry CF, but that made me LOL

From what little I've read about them, none are brainiacs.

Could be. I tend to view cats as "mad scientists," experimenting with humans -Beware!!

Cat poop parasite controls minds early – and permanently, study finds

by MAGGIE FOX

Even after infection with Toxoplasma gondii has been removed from rodents' brains, they continue to behave as if unafraid of the smell of cat urine, suggesting that the infection causes long-term changes in the brain. Wendy Ingram and Adrienne Greene
A parasite that changes the brains of rats and mice so that they are attracted to cats and cat urine seems to work its magic almost right away, and continues to control the brain even after it’s gone, researchers reported on Wednesday.

The mind-controlling parasite, called Toxoplasma gondii, might make permanent changes in brain function as soon as it gets in there, the researchers report. They aren’t sure how yet.

Imagine it's hard to gauge the stupidity of guineas from what I have heard. So many contenders for the "empty brain," award. Can't figure out how they start as normal looking chicks(of some type) and then morph into wide bodies and teeny tiny heads with no room for a brain. Come to think of it - I feel that way about me when I look in the mirror.

Sorry I must have awaken on the wrong side of the bed - yet again.
