The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Ken has Native American blood in him. He builds and plays Indian flutes, and Jamie also plays. Whether the tune is haunting or upbeat, there’s no sound like it. One day I’d love to hear him play one of his with the drumming.

Edited to add: He’s also got a strong Scottish heritage - glad he plays the flute instead of the bagpipes! The learning phase could have been horrendous in this tiny house! :lau
The volume alone indoors! Yikes!

Ken’s favorite out of all Indian Flutes he’s made.

The east side of my property is along a reservation. I've been hearing drumming for days now, and the occasional snippet of singing. I wonder if there's a ceremony or if they're just practicing. I wish I could hear it better. I love first nation drumming.
Might be having a pow wow or a "stomp dance".

Does Ken make any to sell? What kind of wood does he use? Nice looking flute.:thumbsup

Never been able to talk him into selling a single one! He's used cedar scraps, chokecherry, and poplar. Each wood has different resonating qualities. After Jamie got out of the Navy, Ken sent him the one Jamie learned to play on. Little Diane also has one, but because she was small her flute was smaller. Not even sure she still has it, sad to say. Ken has the one I took the photo of, plus a couple of others he's not quite so proud of (but which still sound great) tucked away on the top shelf of his closet. My personal favorite appearance-wise is the one with the bird that's a little smaller, bound with rawhide and has a feather hanging down from the rawhide. (The bird is what covers the main hole and can change the pitch)

I can see why it's Ken's favourite Blooie. It's gorgeous. I'll have to see if I can find someone playing one on YouTube so I can hear what they sound like.

My ringneck doves have snuck two eggs past me - they are nesting in a food bowl. I usually remove the eggs before they start developing (or they've been infertile up until now) but they look to be around 5 days along so I don't have the heart to take them.

Just saw a MASSIVE raccoon next to the chicken coop... just sitting on the roll of hardware cloth I put on the side (after something had dug in) and the food was knocked over. I'm thinking this thing is after the feed and not the chickens? Didn't even move when I screamed "HEY!" or with that 10000 lumen flashlight we had on (were looking at my plants) and shined directly on it...... my dad had to go over there and even then it was slow moving. Let the dog out but he doesn't seem to care.

I thought it was a cat or dog at first. It was HUGE.

He started caring when I brought him over to it lol I guess my dad didn't? So instead of letting him in when he wanted, I called him and brought him over and he found where he was sitting and started sniffing furiously all around where it apparently has been. He tried to follow it into the woods but I tightened the rope and wouldn't let him go further than like 15 feet. Didn't want him to get tangled on something. But he did come back and mark his territory near the coop lol

If we lived in the country and had a different dog I might consider letting him go after it as I've read stories of dogs hunting down foxes and coons and stuff and/or at least running them off property but we live in kinda suburbs so couldn't fire a gun and dispatch it anyway and would probably get fined for a loose dog or something, especially as it's so late here. And of course don't want a dog fighting a coon anyway, could get hurt. But the main reason is Gator is also older and sickly now. I mean he didn't even notice anything was out there. And didn't smell it till I brought him over? So too risky. Don't need him getting hurt. Doesn't have too reliable of a recall anyway. Sometimes he does, he's really good in certain situations but not always plus he's going deaf so he probably wouldn't be able to hear me anyway. But maybe letting a dog run one down isn't a good idea or responsible anyway?
