The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

My Grandpas son in law Was a PE for PG&E on the project for the lake and Turbine method of energy storage. Among other things for PG&E...

The Chinese have extensive experience running battery farms alng with Solar and wind arrays.... I was reading on them just recently... One of those batteries can supply a grid of homes...

One of the things we in the US need to consider is going DC.... AC is awsom for transmitting long distance... but DC is more efficent for home use... there has to be a compromise in there somewhere... Because conversion between the two is very inefficient.

The old Edison and Tesla battle for AC or DC current!

Edison won

got to take pictures... today.

The way I learned it... Well .. Online through Youtube... Been doing it about a year with time off of about three months for illness.

My back ground Is a scattered mix of Artistic . Drawing and sketching, sculpting, Welding (art sculpture), Beading (loom and earrings), Macrame, Leather tooling, and silver casting ....etc. IN the casting class I learned how to solder jump rings.

The wire for making jewelry started out with making beads for a bracelet. Found the beautiful art pieces on YouTube in the process... Oh there are some absolutely stunning take your breath beautiful things people create.... From Setting stones to working in silver.... I want to eventually work in silver.... But I have to get working in Copper and Jewelers bronze down first. My workshop is incomplete.

I need to be able to temper the work (tumble) Age the wire and Polish it to a shine again... I want to be able to solder and take the temper out if need be... Working the wire hardens it. All will take equipment that is noisy and Dust producing.

The engineer in me knows what needs to happen... but really it IS a hands on process that may make me reach my set point.

That sounds like one of those pastimes that can expand and grow for a long time.

Years ago I took every art class offered in school...one of my favorites was jewelry making, the silver was fun to work with. But since wearing jewelry has never been my thing, guess I kind of forgot about it. And now, after 2 rounds of carpal tunnel surgery, don't think I could handle the fine work.

It's nice to be able to see yours, it's very intricate. Thanks for sharing your work with us!

funny I can barely wear a watch... Years of working assembly jobs made me stop wearing rings.... Earrings and necklaces went there after... Sigh.

I just bought Stainless wire for both jewelry making and for making stainless earrings. It work hardens very quickly so I have to be quick with my constructions... When I make chain ... Each link has to be formed and hammered to make it work hardened. So it wont come apart. So with stainless I am hoping to make chain without having to hammer.

By the way I have carpel tunnel but the jewlry wire wrapping and weaving has no effect on it. Nor does the hammering.... Typing does.

It will be very expensive but is likely less expensive than the pumping water up a hill to then run back down through turbines method of energy storage.
Water pumps aren't that expensive. Of course it works only if you are generating enough "free" extra solar/wind power during the day to pump it back up and don't need more at night than the hydro generates.

But Deb, we can't even convert to metric after all these years! When were we supposed to do that, 40 or 50 years ago? I can't imagine what it would cost in actual $$ to convert to all DC appliances, lights, etc.

@bruceha2000 yes, we'll still have lots of choice as to which power company we go with so sounds like we are lucky. I kinda wish you guys used metric too, then I wouldn't have to convert everything. Hubby can work in both but I'm a bit young for that.

To everyone feeling under the weather I do hope you feel better soon. The change of season always brings out the bugs.

Hope you'll share a picture of your necklace when you're done! How did you learn to do the wire wrapping?

Are you feeling better this morning Sharron? Enjoy the auction
no, felt even worse at the auction, husband thought i had fallen asleep because i was bend over sidewards trying to get away from back pain, but i ended up taking three ibuprofens and that seemed to help, at least i made it thru the end of the morning auction but finally started feeling so what better this afternoon:)
thank you for asking tho

Morning all. Feeling quite awful this morning. Bad migraine and slightly nauseous from it. Had it last night, figured sleep would help but apparently not. Didn't really sleep well either. Went to sleep around 12:30, woke up around 6:30, fell back asleep until a little after 8 then couldn't go back to sleep. Have to do the dog today at 11:30 too. Ugh. Thinking I will take an Excedrin to try to deal but sometimes that upsets my stomach because of the caffeine but I don't really have a choice because Advil basically does nothing lately and Pamprin does nothing for headaches and I think we're out of Tylenol. So if I gotta go, I gotta go but at least I won't be suffering quite as much. Gotta find something to eat it with though so I don't tear up my stomach even more, don't have much in the house atm. Also my sinuses/ears have been bugging me lately so I'm not sure if it's related or not.
feel better
