Birch bark is awesome. If I don't have any of that, it's sticks & paper for me.
Yep, use to burn Ash, the best I think because it burns green or dried. Leaves little ashes to remove. Boise de ark (pronounced Bowdark) was great too, for a wood stove but not a fire place...to many sparks, it has a high BTU value. Oak was the worse IMHO.

@The Farmers' Daughter YAY, so glad to see you back again! Good update on the house, 1 step backwards for 2 steps ahead :p

@JaeG that property sounds great and I love all the plans you have. Still have my fingers crossed for you (you do know that makes it difficult to type, right?). :fl

@007Sean if you're having trouble getting shoes on, I know where you can get a pair of backless waterproof winter boots to slide into :gig
Funny Debby :lau

every thing sounds so nice
we used to raise hair sheep, much better tasting than wool sheep, just couldn't handle the wool sheeps taste(our own lambs) but when we started the hair sheep, big difference in taste

That's interesting that they taste better. Might make me brave enough to try! I couldn't do it myself but there are quite a few 'homekill' places to choose from who will do it all for you.

You moved Jae? Yay! What's the new place like? Did you sell your house quickly?

Not yet but we've just seen a 10 acre property on Thursday we really like. We are going back up tomorrow to take another look and make sure we can fit a house on the highest point that has beautiful rural views. I've found a transportable house I really like the floor plan of. It would be built new so it could be May/June before its ready but after spending 6 years doing this place up I'm ready for it all just to be done.

I prefer not to wear any footwear in the house, except maybe socks, that wouldn't have stopped the burn! And right now, it hurts so bad to try and get anything on my feet, not limber enough and when trying to bend over to do that, sends shockwaves of pain through my leg.
when husband had the knee replaced, he had some kind of sock puller upper, in fact he still uses it to get his socks on because he can't bend over to reach his feet and his knee doesn't bend so well.

Yeah I was thinking I need to get a couple of those long handled grippers! :lau I don't bend like I use to either...now days I break! :lau

Going for a training session (excuse for "I'm the new director and want to meet everyone"):duc Good news is I'll get to see the grand babies.

I use dryer lint in a toilet paper roll. Never seem to run out of the two.
thats a good idea, will have to try that, like you said, never run out and cheap
