The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Ground up.... Re-purposing what I have... countless Dog kennel panels. Aviary panels and enough tin to make a roof... Though I will have to buy enough to cover a 12 x 16 section. I also have enough Garage doors to make the Wind break walls... East and west sides.

Location will change as well so that I can do a waterline from the mains past the Coop and Horse corral leaving ma a faucet over by the storage container. About two hundred linear feet.

And no I dont work hard I work smart... kennel panels are self supporting assembly will be just a couple of clamp bolts at each intersection... and I can drag them in place with my garden tractor. Then all I have to do is stand them up and zip tie to hold them in place while I fiddle with the bolts.

I will have to get creative with the roof still havent figured that one out yet. But I will get some one young and nimble to help me....

Oh and when its all done it will be a poultry house with a space as a workshop.

That sounds like a good plan (and having a coop + workshop very handy)! Hope you document the progress so we can follow along.

No, we're never 'prepared' no ,matter how much time in advance we have. Just know you were together at the end and be grateful for the time you had. Regrets are not necessary, I'm sure your mother knew you loved her.

And absolutely, remember to enjoy the ones we care about while we can :hugs
I suppose it's just part of the grief, easier to find the negatives and sadness when you're already swimming in it. But I definitely agree with you. Thank you for your thoughts :hugs

Hey everyone, thanks for checking in Debby.

Been a rough go around here lately. My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer on Oct. 13, 2018. I've been trying to get her to come back since then, and far before that. She had a bit of an independent and stubborn streak, that lady :) But she decided she was going to make the move. They ended up having to turn around about an hour outside of Portland and head back to OHSU, where she remained for about 5 days.

Finally got my mama home and settled in after the week journey from Coos Bay to here. She told us when she got here that the doctors in Portland had given her two weeks, based on her latest scans. We got to spend four precious but horribly short days with her, before she passed away on Saturday, June 1st. She was 54 years young.

I've never known a loss of this magnitude. I'm just trying to figure out a new normal without her...
So sorry for your loss! My Grandmother died suddenly at 43. I never met her.

Thank you, Cap. That's far too young. I'm sorry that you never got to meet her. Both of my grandpa's died before I was born.
I met the other one, my Dad's Mom. We used to go fishing together. Sadly, she had Alzheimer's later in life. I never got to meet her husband, who had cancer.

Put the littles permanently with the bigs yesterday. Sort of. They still have a divider but I cut a hole in it.

Let them free range together again yesterday and then since they were all in the run anyway, I locked them in there together with the bigs and watched before I cut the hole. Everything seemed to be going okay so I did it.

A couple chase attempts by the meanie but the others all ignored them and even let them climb in the food bowl. Even my piggie Australorp went to eat and then a little was in the bowl so she walked away much to my shock lol and this was with new food too cause I put the grower in there. Though they had gotten their fill before I let the littles in but still. Thought she would defend it but no.

And last night the leghorn went on the low roost then the Easter egger joined her. But then the Leghorn chickened out (sorry for that corny unintentional pun lol can’t think of a better phrase) and jumped back down and ran back with the littles to the baby roost lol but the EE stayed and even flew up to the top of the wall!! Then found the rafters and settled. But then she heard her sisters calling, flew to a closer roost above them, and was kind of pacing along the walls and the roost cause she couldn’t figure out how to get down. But she finally decided to just stay and went back to the roost and stayed and the bigs let her!! She stayed all night! The others were huddled together behind the baby roost not even on it ha I’m surprised the leghorn backed out as she’s usually my bold feisty one. Maybe tonight.

It’s funny too though because today they haven’t gone outside yet. Or barely. Yesterday they were all mingling. Today they have been staying inside. BUT. They have been venturing into the rest of the coop outside their zone and checking all that out first and hanging out in there in all the new space while the bigs hang out outside so maybe they will get brave enough eventually and venture outside lol hopefully.

But things seem to be going well so far. Probably mostly cause they are staying separated still. :lau maybe with time they will mingle more ha

But it’s funny too cause the meanie seems less mean locked up than she does free ranging I think because the other hens boss her around and put her in her place whereas when she is outside she is often by herself and the big honcho lol they show her she is not. :lau
