The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

It is desolate from a certain perspective... but Its quiet so quiet you can hear the insects rattling their wings... ON some days. The goats hooves sounded like leaves rustling under the trees.

I could actually feel my horses hoof beats from my bed room. When she spooked in her corral ... its pitch black on a moonless night Yet if you dont use a flash light you can see by starlight.... and memory of the ground.

IF you can be quiet enough you can see Jack rabbits in the morning laying in the shade of the Chaparal enjoying the morning coolness laying in the blow sand... turn away and back and they are gone.

We have three different kinds of rabbits.... Brush Rabbits, Cotton tails and Jack Rabbits... small medium and Ginormous in that order...

Brush rabbit Which is 2/3ds the size of a Cotton tail

Desert Cotton tail

Sonoran Jack rabbit which is about twice the size of a Cotton tail

Those are cool!!! I love the last one what a beautiful animal. We have cotton tails that's about it for rabbits. But their are a lot of bird species around here. The reason why I thought desolate is probably because the image of a desert that Hollywood projects in your mind.

It sure sounds like a cool place to visit. I would never guess there was that many resources in the desert . That's a deep well I would guess you would have some pretty clean water coming out. I like that method the old timers use. You really do have to be in sync with your land!

Sorry if I sounded mean ,I do that a lot:th

I'm still learning ...
Beautiful horses !!!!

I know it, my mother in law wants to move to the city where the houses are 3ft away. But my poor father in law loves the country all he does is out door stuff. I wonder if that's why she wants to move.? So when she presented her idea to him he's like "okay you are going im saying here". :gig He wasn't completely serious but now she has finally stopped talking about moving.
Gawd they have those houses here... the house is built right on one of the fence lines... Three or four feet from the next house.... YOu cant park on the street and some of them the house has two entrances one for guests or a front door but the main entrance is from the garage.......

I have an old Horse friend who lives in one... Her back yard fence is glass to take in the view of a golf course...

They are under covenants and restrictions just like owning a condo... Front yard and landscaping is managed by the HOA... Back yard is on you.

They can dictate what color your window shades can be and wether or not you can work on your car in the driveway. .... Shudder.

LOL.... I bought my first Forecart from an online friend that lived in Riverside... She was moving to their land in Utah... Packing up all her Fijords in a big horse trailer and leaving her husband in Riverside. He got her settled on their Land and hauled the horse trailer back to Riverside. It had living quarters in it and he kept it parked at the fire station where he worked. Had two more years to retirement.

She also road her horses... When she was asked if the Fijords could keep up with the other trail horses... She laughed and said flat walk and the other horses would be eating dust...

i could never live in a place like that, if i own it, i decide what i like, not them and what i can and can't do on my property

Oh I get it, our whole family was still there and I didn't want to leave. We weren't making it in CA and it was only going to get worse. Neither of our families were helping us, just left to our own devices. I was a stay at home mom until my oldest was in middle school so I had no skills and wasn't making much money. The job I have now paid as much at that time as what we made combined in CA. I wanted my kids to have stability so I took the job, got my insurance license and went back for kids and cats. In our case it was the right thing to do. His family is still pissed at me for it but I don't care.

Believe me I hear that. Its not easy raising a family of 5 out here on a single income & we're very much on our own. DH is used to moving around a lot & he struggles with the crazy politics here. He's definitely ready to leave. My kids are 5th gen so cal born on my side & the sage/fennel/salty air is in our blood (tho I struggle with a lot of the politics too.)

My brother lives in your area & its only a 7hr drive for me unlike the 22hrs it takes me to get up to my mom & sister in OR. Heck, that's close enough that my brother drove out here to babysit for me once when I was in a pinch.

Adorable!!! :love

I spent the better part of my childhood running around all over the desert with my folks camping. I'm very familiar and love it. I think there are a lot of people who live in CA that have no clue they're living in the desert. The aqueduct made that so in a lot of ways.

My grandpa traveled around the state building parts of that aqueduct. At the time it was about the only legit work you could get out here. Its a cool thing to be able to tell the kids when we're on road trips & keep crisscrossing it.

So I take it you're staying put Roomy :p

There's no way I would even consider moving to Denver these days. Too many people, too much traffic, too much crime, crazy housing prices. No thanks!

To say the least, no way. We've looked for years in IM's area & found a lot of great stuff, but haven't had the nerve to move that far from the ocean. We've looked up in WA. I love that area, but anything within a reasonable commute is not cheap either. Mostly now I look around Atlanta, GA, but I'm sure I'll end up staying here.

Quite true... My land is in a smidgen of the Sonoran Desert. Which is a HUGE desert. Goes way down into Mexico and up into Arizona and parts of Texas I believe.

Brush Rabbits are coastal and Native to the area. Their range goes far inland to my area and down into Baja California. Oh and Jack Rabbits are not rabbits but Hares... Which means their babies are born with hair and their eyes open...
None of them need to drink water... but will if its available. I put out a low watering bowl when I am up there... fed by a float valve. This way no one dies in the water tub for the horse which is 110 gallons.

I have family in the Mojave.... My place is tropical compared to the Mojave. to give you an idea Death valley is in the Mojave... The town of Baker is near Death valley they have a big sign that shows the temperature outside... My son and I stopped there to refuel He wanted to stay in the car When I opened the door the blast furnace hit me... and I said no... come in and wait inside.

That thermometer showed 120 degrees... It was like sticking your head in an oven...

Deserts are different... Mild Hot and some are very very cold. Alaska even has a desert. The criteria that makes a desert is annual rainfall, or precipitation. Some deserts haven't recorded rainfall in Several decades... My little patch of heaven gets about twelve inches per year... Rain and or Snow.

I have my live till I die location... nineteen acres that cannot be split.... a livable well. Isolation but I know um er used to know each of my neighbors. There is forty acres next to me and I dearly would love to buy that... Maybe some day. Solar power, Wind power and alternative power sources are feasable and very doable at home. I know enough about each Circa 2009 and 10 ...

I so want t build an earth ship. Using recycled materials and such.... Built an integrated green house..... Oh wait I have one of those...

Well you get the picture.

Not going anywhere.

We would both much rather be on the coast. My husband was born in Long Beach and grew up spending summers at Catalina. I sure as hell wouldn't move anywhere it snows, hated it as a kid and more so as an adult.
