Hi everyone - it's long overdue for a catch-up! These cockatiel babies are keeping me busy (still have 5 to find homes for) and we have been battling red mites in the chicken coop thanks to a rat who chewed a hole in the coop floor, not big enough to get through thankfully but the fact he keeps visiting must've been enough to share his critters. We will have to paint it white inside once we've got rid of the tenacious little critters so I can keep an eye out for them as we lost our silkie to it before I realised what was happening.

I'm having to be really careful about not transferring them into the aviary. I did find a few on the quail feeders in there but I've changed them for different ones and soaked the others in neem oil and water because spraying them did absolutely nothing - more just kept appearing and I found the same with the chicken feeders. It didn't matter how many times I sprayed them, more would appear. I really hate mites. Anyway, I read that borax will keep them away in an aviary so I now have that all through the bedding. The birds haven't shown any interest in it and I know pigeon keepers put that in their birds bathing water to keep external parasites away. So far I haven't found any more in there.

Despite the drought we are currently experiencing (worst since 1914 apparently) our little heifers are doing well.

On the left are 6 of them, and then there's Macaroon (who still doesn't like us much) standing under the smallest tree she could find.

We recently got a delivery of water for our water tanks and the guy, who has been delivering water to this area for 33 years, is the busiest he's ever been, and he's doing 13 deliveries a day! I think he'll be glad when the rains come (fingers crossed they will). In contrast the South Island of NZ has been hit with flooding, and are due to get doused again by an ex-tropical cyclone.

I have to share my new cockatiels with you - they are a pair of silvers. The hen has the pearl pattern on her wings too. They are the prettiest things I've ever seen (even though they are currently molting). They are out in the aviary and aren't tame, but the guy we got them off has kids as well so they aren't terrified of us. They are only young ones so they should get used to us.

Those are beautiful eggs @Blooie - I'm not getting any at the moment due to the mites so I'm very envious.

Hi Jae, what a nice surprise to see your post! Your heifers are looking good and such pretty new cockatiels. Hope that drought eases up soon.
