That's sad Phil.

My family is scattered and far from where I live, it would be a tough tradition to visit their graves. People just don't stay put anymore.

(that's pretty official, right?)

I wasn't here much today, I was off looking high and low for missing ornaments and tree skirt. Found the ornaments, the tree skirt has a APB out on it, lol.

Families can be complicated and very messy. I think it was @sourland (?) that had a quote along the lines that friends are the family you make for yourself. I like that.
 
I haven't done a thing as far as decorating is concerned. We got a new loveseat and recliner this summer, not taking into account where the heck the Christmas Tree would fit. <sigh> I will get out the MoosieNativity, the village, and we have to have the Charlie Brown Tree. If those things are up, it's Christmas here.

That Charlie Brown Tree is the most special thing in the house at Christmas time, ever, and Katie and Evan love to tell the story of their great-grandparents (my Ma and Dad) and why every single house in the entire family - brother, sisters, nieces, nephews, and their families have one as well. The first year Jamie, our grandson was married, he and Rachel got one and he delighted in telling the story, so now even Ma's great-great grandchildren are learning it. This is the very condensed version of the story. The full version was printed in our local paper a few years ago, and has been reprinted by request since then. I should add that Katie's middle name is LaVonne, named after my mother. Ma was buried on Christmas Eve, 1990. But the love she and Dad had for each other lives on.

The Village is also special. Every piece in it has something to do with our family....a replica of the Mission San Diego de Alcala in San Diego where our kids were baptized, Peppermint Porch Day Care for when I started being Katiebug's full time day care provider, and of course a Ronald McDonald House in honor of the RMH in Denver where Jenny and I lived for 6 weeks before and after Kendra was born. Lots of other pieces as well - the Bluebird Feed and Seed that Tam and Dan got me when he was getting his degree in horticulture and I kept Austin for them....it goes on and on. Not a single piece in the entire set is without meaning to our family in some way.

The Village...have no idea why the RMH showed up split like that - usually the panorama thingy on my camera doesn't do that.



And the adorable ( and no longer available) Moose Nativity Scene. The year that Katie was born (December 17), Jenny's mom and stepdad came out to see her for the first time. They took Kenny and Jenny Christmas shopping in Cody, and Jenny spotted the Moose Nativity. She and Kenny couldn't really afford it, especially as many pieces as they wanted to get, but Lee and Gail (Jenny's folks) really wanted them to get it for me. So they lent the kids the money on the spot, and it took them months to repay it. But I loved it! Then a few years ago someone broke into our storage unit. The boxes and styrofoam were all destroyed and every single piece of my MoosieNativity scene was gone. I was sick. We tried to find more, but it was only last year when Ken located one at a shop in Canada. They said that was the end of them - they hadn't been made in years and I lucked out. Ken not only replaced the pieces that were stolen, he also got every single piece made - I didn't even know those additional characters existed!




I just love it! Moose have always been my favorite Wyoming critters, and for Kenny and Jenny to want me to have it so badly to commemorate Katie's first Christmas with the family made it doubly special.

So if the tree isn't up, it's no big deal. I have Christmas if those three things are out and I'm content.

Good chilly morning everyone!

@Blooie loved your story of the tree, village and moose nativity! Were the moose from Big Sky Montana? They remind me of the bears I have from them. So glad Ken was able to get you another set. I love it when there's stories behind the things we have around us.

Today is the day. I'm going to force myself to get started on that gingerbread coop. Spent so much time looking for stuff yesterday, I didn't feel like messing with it. But today is the day for coop assembly. Wish me luck, this could be a total disaster (I'm not known for my construction skills)!

What's everyone else up to today?
 
What part?
My grandparents are in Lake Worth with their parents, but we never visit.
They get thought of everyday, and I think that is the way they would prefer it.

They are buried in Englewood. My oldest sister (the GOOD one) has a place there so she goes down after Christmas each year and takes care of things.

We also visit Elaine's maternal grandmother's grave - as requested by E's mother.
