Petey the pit bull has fleas. We've given him a flea bath and followed up with DE powder dustings but they are stubborn buggers. Anyone have something that really works, first to get rid of them and second as a preventative?

I hate fleas. They are difficult to eradicate - they lay so many eggs and those hatch to larvae and cocoon and can lay dormant for years to pop out and start the problems all over.

Hope Petey is an outside dog, so you aren't dealing with in house fleas.

You will need to wash his bedding weekly, treat the environment he inhabits and try to rid active fleas on him as often as possible.
A flea comb with a tub of soapy water works - but a lot easier on a small cat than a big dog.

For cats, the vets do have a shot that lasts a month to kill the fleas that bite the animal. You may want to contact the vet for some advice.

Thanks @sunflour ! Petey hasn't ever been in the house, although he would like to (I think he must have been a house pet, he seems to be housebroke). Funny, fleas rarely get on me but DH is like a flea magnet and gets little swellings if he's bit by them.

We bought a spray bottle of something at Walmart a few years ago cuz our dog had them extremely bad....thank goodness he's an outside dog!! Had to spray him several times and spray our yard also with a powerful chemical. We had a lot of wild rabbits that year so wondering if they carried them in??
We use this product now...there are 3 tubes and you put it on once a month, have had no problems since.

Is the UltraGuard something you can buy at a store or did you get it from a vet?

Side note: I see the package says for dogs 61-150 pounds...what kind of dog do you have?

Not sure what he is... We adopted him from the humane society and he is the best dog ever! We think he's part lab but he's a super hairy dog so hard to get the oil on his skin but it works well. I got that at Walmart also.

Thank you so much! I'm going to town this weekend so will look for it at WalMart.

That is a big, hairy dog! Petey would turn into a popsicle in that snow
