Yep, here it's 50 miles to Cody, the closest town of any size to us....a little over 9000....and that's where we go to Walmart or whatever else we need to do. Big stuff we go up to Billings, almost 100 miles north. The nearest fast food joint is 25 miles away in Powell. When we moved here Cowley had about 400 people. We've grown to a little over 600 but still have just the Cowley Merc - a gas station/convenience store. Oh,and the post office. There's no house-to-house mail delivery so the whole town has to go to the post office to pick up mail. There are only 2 stoplights in all of Big Horn County, one in Lovell and one in Greybull. There are 2 Interstates here, 25 and 80, but we have to travel hours on two lane, narrow highways to get to them and they are both on the opposite side of the state from us, one to the east and the other way south by @N F C .

You have to want to live here really bad to want to live here. We love it. I have the Big Horn Mountains to the East outside and the Pryor Mountains to the north outside my kitchen windows, and the Beartooth/Absarokas could be seen from my bedroom window if our garage didn't block the view. People still stroll by in the summer and stop on the sidewalk to visit when we're out on the deck. Cars and pickups still pull sleds of kids down the street on snowy days. The lady next door has horses, the guy across the street has horses and cows, and there are places here in town that have donkeys, sheep, chickens (including of course me), turkeys, ducks....you name a farm animal someone here will have it. Pigs are only allowed for a few short months while kids are getting them fitted for fair...otherwise they are a no-no...but every other kind of livestock is still here. Yep, my town. Love it!

We live 6 miles from a tiny place of about 400 where they have a post office and 1 restaurant; to do any shopping we go 12 miles to a town of about 9,000. But there aren't any big box stores there (except Wal Mart of course) so we do big shopping trips in Cheyenne or sometimes Casper and both of those are about 2+ hours (one way) from where we live. Blooie will tell you, out here in WY, you travel!

How you been TK? Are your kids still young enough to enjoy trick & treating?

we dont' live in a town. the nearest dot on a map, is about 2 miles from us, but we are fortunate to live within 30 miles of a Walmart, and small town hardware store. drive about 45 miles to the big box stores. The water district, not even a town we live close to, has a gas station, and a post office, no lights, except the ones that blink when the train comes thru.

I have to drive, 2 hours to a real city, but still not nearly as remote as you guys. If it wasn't for all the cold weather, I'd love it up there!!

I love it here too Blooie! We have the same post office set up...no home pick up or delivery but everyone gets a free PO box. The people have all been so friendly. I went to pick up our mail Friday and the woman walking her dog in the park waved, the one policeman we have did the same and the older woman I held the door for at the PO gave me a cheery "good day" greeting. The waitress at the one restaurant knows what we like to eat and remembers food allergies a couple of us have. I even met the owner of the place at the course about a month ago and he promised to be a member next season. It's like that in the town of 9,000 too mostly, especially with the locally owned businesses. The UPS driver knows us, that we won't be able to get deliveries at the course any more but even though the UPS system can't recognize our address (most mail systems can't), he knows where we live and will drop things off at our door.

You really get a feeling of "belonging" once you get to know a few people, it's nice.

Just for kicks, here's a map of WY...DH and I live down south-center, close to the North Platte River, about an hour west of Laramie. Blooie's up northwest, not far from Cody (right B?).

Always wanted to visit WY, but never made it. Yet! Had a friend in college that moved there to work for one of the big coal companies. I'm thinking near Laramie. And I also have a step-sister that lived near Cody. My mom and step-dad drove out there a few times, but I never got to go. I've lost touch with her since my mom and step-dad passed away.

You gotta get out here, at least to see a couple of the national parks! They are truly unique and special places. Once you see Yellowstone, you never forget it and the Tetons are magnificent.
