The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

This discussion of dog training reminded me - I recently watched "The Queen" on Netflix. It's about how the British royal family dealt with the aftermath of Diana's death, and it stars Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth. Couldn't possibly do something about her without her dogs, right? In scenes at Balmoral, we see her with 3 Labs, in others, there are the iconic Corgis (sometimes, there were so many in the scene, I wasn't sure just how many there were! Is it 5?) Clearly, these dogs were well trained and the actress had spent some time working with them; they had their eyes glued on her and when she said, "come dogs," they almost moved as one. I couldn't help but wonder about outtakes, though. Dogs will be dogs, after all.

She has learned when she comes racing up to you to sit as she wants to be pet. We are training like you did.

Years ago, DH and I had a couple of Shepherd mixes that someone abandoned and we adopted. They were trouble on paws! Bunsen was the brains of the outfit - I'd get mad about their latest act of destruction, and he'd tip his head to one side and you could just hear him say, "you're mad again. Maybe you should see someone about that temper of yours." But one thing they learned early was that automatic "sit." I might catch Bunsen with the latest infraction still in his jaws, and he'd turn around, look at me, and sit. You knew he was thinking, "Sit. You never get in trouble by sitting." Can't yell at a dog that's being good, right? And then he'd tip his head, and it was all I could do not to laugh. Gads I miss that dog!

I know she will be a good dog eventually and she does have a sweet nature about her but....I'm glad we still have our old dog as he's never been a vehicle chaser and never has left the yard other then if he goes for a walk with me, so she's seeing Bear's good behavior. Hattie irritates him on a regular basis. We've never heard so much barking and growling from him. We've invested too much money in her just to give up so patience patience patience. We've never had an actual puppy. Bear was from the humane society and our dog before that was a yellow lab who was a house dog we got from my sister and chewed everything up in her house including the corner of her new kitchen cabinet so he was rehomed to us and put outside and he was the best dog ever. He apparently did not like being a house dog. Sorry for the long winded response, thanks for the advice!
She sounds like a busy pup. An older dog can help in the raising. It is a journey to raise a puppy, more work than people expect, especially with certain ones. I have no clue what to do with human children, but dogs I'm really good with, and can raise the best dogs. It will get frustrating at times. Hopefully you can curb the car chasing as that's a deadly hobby, but she is a shepherd with the instinct to chase.

Some people don't like Cesar Milan, but I find his ways brilliant and they have allowed me to be pack leader to 5 strong females with merely using body language, and have taught me how to speak dog instead of expecting the dog to learn our language alone.

As you can see I will talk dogs all day long just like I will talk chickens.

Your pup definitely reminds of my shepherd I had as a teenager. I found German shepherds to be one of those challenging breeds, so you got you work cut out for you. They are smart, but strong independent at times dogs, but mine was certainly one that was special to me, but they all are.

She doesn't chase cars, sorry if i worded that funny. She's actually kind of scared of vehicles. I'm just hoping with Bear being her role model she will follow in his foot steps. We won't put up with chasing vehicles, she'd have to be kenneled then. We will get it figured out:)

Got word about my cousin in the Houston, TX area. She had to evacuate but is ok. Not sure what she'll find when she's able to go home again but at least she's ok.

Thoughts and prayers to all the folks down there and the families that care about them.
That's a relief to know she's ok. I hope her home isn't located in the bad areas. :fl

X2! My clients had the TV on the coverage. Such a slow and arduous process of rescuing everyone.

Hope you all have a good Wednesday. Got to get to work to get another big take-out order ready (we've had more of those than inside diners lately).

Nicky, looks like my cousin's house is in one of the bad areas...her part of town is near a dam where they've had to do a controlled release of water. Won't know where things end up for her for a while yet. There are several of us cousins that grew up together and we're still a tight group, we'll all pitch in to make sure she's taken care of.

Oh my! You guys are so funny!! I was just gone from BYC while I wrestled with the decision of whether or not to get out the chicken raising world, and I know me so well that I knew if I kept coming here it would make the decision even harder. Unreasonable fear of not fitting in anymore, I guess. But the decision was made, the chickens are gone, and guess what? I'm still me! :wee
