The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Congrats on the new layer :) No Welsummer eggs yet, but a couple of those gals have really big wattles and combs. None squatting yet :(

When was yours born? I think mine are a few weeks younger.

Oops, don't know how I missed this sunflour...sorry for the slow response.

My Wellie was hatched early April, when was yours? I was a bit surprised to find her egg as early as it was...I thought she'd be at least 6 months old (or older) before laying.

Morning everyone, happy Saturday!

What's everyone up to this weekend? Today I'm playing around with chicken...maybe not the sort of chickens you might think though. I need to come up with a new chicken entree for the restaurant next season so am experimenting with chicken in the smoker.

Anyone want to sample?

Mine were born april 25th - hormones are flying so maybe some eggs in a few weeks?

When I got my BO's, I had read they may not lay til 6 months or more, and all 3 started by 20 weeks :)

Yep, would love to have samples. My parents used to smoke a turkey for holidays, they were quite good - nothing exotic, just placed in their smoker with simple seasonings.

The past couple of weeks here have been surreal - with Irma and some major changes in management at work it has been exhausting. So today - rest, wash clothes and just watch chicken tv :)

Guess your chicks hatched 2-3 weeks later than mine so BOLO for eggs soon-ish :)fl)!

I've had smoked turkey before and you're right, they are good. I'm trying to find something that doesn't involve breaking down a full-sized bird. Gotta go to the store to shop first then it's time to smoke!

Changes in work management? Ewww, that's not usually fun. Hope you can take today to just do whatever you want and relax!

Mom and Dad smoked chickens whole and cut up or pulled apart after cooked.

With nails, I have clippers with a guard on the back, you can only cut a little bit at a time. If you've got a nail that's hard to see the quick, you can use a torch. I think a little bit, often is better/easier than less frequently and "huge drama".

When Chip says torch, that means flashlight. Skip the torch, roasting your dogs foot is not going to help, lol. Just translating. I think those terms are neat, like your car has a boot. In other words, it has a trunk.

Just use a mini led torch or something, it only takes a second and you can see what's what. It doesn't cook their foot. :D It's better than hitting the quick.

I know that, just pulling your leg. We call them flashlights. I don't need one, i probably have done more nails than many vets. If you do hit a quick, they have stuff called Quick Stop that works well.

Yes, I think capricorn was joking about the kind of torch that's wooden and with the fire burning at the end LOL

Here we call those torches and new torches flashlights. So she was joking that the fire from an old torch (considered the real torch here) would burn the dog's nail!

Quick stop does work well. But the screeching and blood were bad for me :thWhen I had trimmed nails as close as I dared (not very close), I would finish with a special nail file thing I got. The short sides kept the nail in the right grove, and the floor of the item had something more gritty that sandpaper. I just had to hold the thing in one hand and use the other hand to move the nail back and forth. Did a good job and the dogs didn't seem to care.

That thing sounds handy. And oh yeah i freaked out when i quicked my dog and blood everywhere lol

We lost one of my favorite dogs to heart worms - it was a devastating event. She was a sweet Dalmation - in Georgia the threat is year round.

I'm so sorry :(

Yum! I love smoked chicken. But no travelling for me (it's probably a bit too far anyway, though it is smoked chicken, mmmm) - my DS is now sick with what DH had (still has really though he's dragged himself off to work). I'm hoping I'm not coming down with it too. Hopefully I'm just tired from much broken sleep.

I've never had smoked turkey - turkey is very expensive here and only really available at Christmas. I love smoked fish though. Yummy!
