I guess it all depends on your weather what will grow. I was looking at Johnnys seed catalogue last night. I could spend some serious money there!
Then i got Meyer hatchery catalogue today. Aaaaaaah!

DW was thinking about MORE chicks from Meyer this spring. Logic being that by June we will have (barring any losses before then):
6 Y/O: 5 - 1 laid well this past year, 1 laid VERY thin shelled eggs, 1 laid OK (but took 2 months off to raise the April chicks from Meyer), 2 pretty much didn't lay at all. Figures there won't be much out of them by next year.
3 Y/O: 6 - Most laid well this past year but they will be 3 Y/O so likely to slow down. 1 (an EE) actually just started laying again after her fall moult. Not counting those eggs to continue through to spring though as she didn't lay last winter.
1 Y/O: 6 - 4 currently laying well, 2 (the Exchequers) started then QUIT!

Yes KD, people plant crops and then plow them under to improve the soil. Clover helps in fixating nitrogen . It also helps reduce erosion.

Yeah probably too late to plant now @KDOGG331, I think you need it to be decently started before it goes dormant for the winter. It would likely sprout in the spring but wouldn't have much time to grow before being turned under.

The erosion thing is interesting. Not an issue here in my raised beds but I can see the need.

And hmmm. That makes sense. So I'd probably have to wait until fall then? So this summer's vegetables wouldn't get the benefit. Not that they need it.

I still just have my 7. Almost forgot about Penny and said 8.

I have sooo many more breeds as well as color varieties of current breeds that I want to try but for now I'll stick with my current ones.

I agree with your DW...you definitely better get more chicks in the spring!

Not at this house, we are a "no cull except for medical reasons" establishment.
Of the seven 2012 girls that are gone, 1 found dead in the run of who knows what medical thing shy of 2 years, 2 were by fox (which shouldn't happen again since I now have better fencing), 2 by coon (the above applies EXCEPT the front gate is likely something a coon could scale so less confident), one from stroke or heart attacks (I THINK) and one I had to put down due to a horrible bloody prolapse (she would have died within a day or two at the most ). One 2015 girl dropped from fatty liver disease (determined by doing a necropsy) at 15 months.

But if we DID make soup, yep a few of those 2012 girls would be on the menu, specifically the non laying Favs and the super thin shell laying Ancona.
