The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

And OHLD, random question I've been thinking about today, are gerbils dusty or very allergen producing? Cause I know some small animals are and I think I was told I'm technically allergic to gerbils when I was a kid but I'm also supposed to be allergic to dogs amd cats and have always had them. So I wondered. I know they are one of the cleaner ones, right? I thought maybe with sand they would be less dusty and more natural but that's harder to clean, right? If I use the natural paper bedding I got maybe it wouldn't be so bad? Anyway, I guess what I'm asking is if they have a lot of dust or dander or anything like that? I guess the only way to find out if I specifically am allergic is to try them? But then if I am I'd have to sell and I get so attached. :(

Sorry, not related to goats but I thought of it. I actually thought of it because I saw Flemish Giant/New Zealand cross bunnies on Craigslist yesterday and started thinking about bunnies again but then I thought with the hay and stuff they may be worse. But I was thinking, I don't think I could do the whole cage or x pen thing and have a small rabbit again and a loose small rabbit, Gator might hurt, but I was thinking, a big giant bunny like that would be more like a dog maybe and I could let it be a house rabbit without Gator hurting it. So then I was debating the two. But idk, if I'm gonna do that, I might as well just get a second cat or dog

They are, either you love them or hate them. I hear plenty of kids get traumatized by goats at the petting zoos.

Awww the poor kids!

I always love visiting the petting zoos and seeing all the animals.

And the goats I've seen usually also want to be petted. Actually, at one petting zoo they ignored me unless i had food mostly but at the regular zoo in the barnyard section where it was just stalls and not really a "petting zoo" and hardly any people, they wanted to be petted lol

Mine put out lots of dust. I think it's from the bedding, but I haven't tried a different bedding to see. I use aspen. My hamsters too put off some dust, but not as much as gerbils who are always digging. They sell paper bedding.

Maybe you should go sniff some gerbils at the pet store to see if you get a reaction? I know Petco will take them back, but I don't think you get your money back.

My female gerbils have been fighting, so if you decide to get some I recommend a pair of males, they are calmer.

Just be sure not to use cedar shavings if you have allergies. Not good for the animals either.

Shavings don't really usually bother me, I use pine in the chicken coop and have used aspen before, but I think maybe in a smaller area, like inside the house, it might be an issue? I forgot they dig a lot. I mean, I knew, but kinda forget. Makes sense they'd produce dust. Maybe if I provide them with tunnels, like cardboard or PVC they might not as much? I've been stock piling cardboard haha

That's a good idea to sniff them though but then again I might not have a problem for just a few minutes as I might with them being in my room.

And hmm that's good to know they take them back but yeah, I think if I had to get rid of them I would just want all their supplies to go with them so I'd probably just sell them or give them away.

And thanks! I'll look for males!

Are your bunnies outdoor?

Oh and my goats get plenty of branches to gnaw on, but still they insist on eating my wood fences.

Yeah, cedar is nasty stuff, I can't stand the smell of it either.

Thanks, yeah, I wouldn't use that :)

It actually slightly upsets me they still sell it.

And I didn't realize it was bad for allergies.

Also sorry, the rabbit thing was completely random too.

But I wondered how much allergens they produce compared to the gerbils. But probably a lot with all the fluff and hay?

What was he waiting for, Christmas? Maybe you have a friend who can get it delivered to their house?

Will they ship it to the golf course? Or have it shipped to someone else where you can pick it up.

1. He does this to me every year, waits until about a week before the holiday then tells me what he really, really, really wants.
2. No postal delivery to the golf course, all that mail goes to a PO box too.
3. I'll have to call my cousin to see if I can use her address in Laramie. Of course, if it can be delivered there, he'll have to drive an hour & a half to pick it up after Christmas because it's too late to get it delivered in time for the holiday anywhere.

I need some eggnog, some nice rummy eggnog :tongue Or some Tylenol.

I think it is more the dander you have to worry about. You should get tested for allergies to animals.
