The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Hey KD

Still under construction so it will look much better when finished with plants etc:

There is a smaller pond still to be installed between the top pond and next one so the water drop is not so far.

Yes, you need filtration and moving water so that it does not go stagnant and the fishes have oxygenated / filtered water [same as tank]. The hole in the ground under the top pond is where the filter/pump will live. Water is drawn from the bottom pond, through the filter and up to the top pond where it cascades back down through two ponds to the bottom one. The pump is solar powered.

The top two ponds serve as bird baths for the local feathered residents and the bottom two are big enough to be home for fish.

This is how we had it set up at our old place with the filter inside the large flower pot:

Because it is not a glass tank, you do not need to worry about cleaning the walls and if you have the filter external as we do, it can be removed and cleaned without messing up the ponds or upsetting the fish.

I love listening to the cascading water and sitting and watching the fish; very relaxing.

Teila it looks awesome! Ponds are a lot of work but rewarding if you get them working right. I've still got to fix my two ponds and get them working again.

No, she divested earlier this year. With her son, daughter-in-law and the 2 grand girls moving from across the street (though just to 6 blocks away) she lost her chicken sitter (older GD, now 12). With all the Masonic Lodge travelling they are doing she decided it was better to give them away while they were healthy than try to figure out how to have them cared for.

I'd love to hear from her again for a variety of reasons.

I'm glad you called her, it's good for her to know no one has forgotten her. She's always welcome here.

I've been feeling that quite a bit Sour, especially lately. You get used to seeing certain people almost daily and when they leave for whatever reason, there's a hole.

I seem to remember her from my earlier days. I too miss those who welcomed me.

I just checked the WY DOT website. I80 (the highway we take to Cheyenne) is closed all the way from here to Laramie for the next 10-12 hours due to the weather.

"Road Closed Due To Winter Conditions
As of December 23 at 03:19 p.m., the estimated opening time is in 10 to 12 hours. Parking on the roadway is prohibited and delays WYDOT from opening the road."

Sheesh, we might be stuck at home for tomorrow too. Guess if that happens, at least I have BYC folks to hang with!

So sorry. It's looking like most of the water has drained off so the risk of ice is minimal, but Ice can trap us in the house for days or weeks.

:hit I miss Blooie too! She's got such a great sense of humour.

It's Christmas Eve here and the kids are being pretty good, amusing themselves, playing together nicely. It's hot and humid but no chance of rain and we really need some rain. Some water carriers are booked up 4 weeks in advance so we'll have to watch our tank water level closely and book in if necessary.

I've got someone coming this afternoon to choose which cockatiel baby they want. I've got one that's refusing to wean, despite the fact that both his brothers have (and he's not the youngest either)!

The Tiny Terror will have to come with us to Mum's tomorrow, along with all the bits and bobs to feed him/her so that will be fun. I'm not taking a cockatiel as well, but I'm only feeding him in the morning and late afternoon, so he can eat some real food during the day.

I would be happy to be blocked in by snow, and (gasp!) be forced to stay home.

We are expecting up to -35 degrees wind chills for Monday. We will be playing "where'd I leave my face" when I go out to feed my critters.

Do yo wanna trade??

Aww that stinks! 6 blocks doesn't seem that far away but I guess it probably is when you're used to seeing them every day plus before she could probably just walk across the street to take care of them, it's harder having to be driven I suppose. But it was probably better to rehome them anyway with dealing with the loss and them moving and health and everything. It must be hard not seeing the girls everyday.

Though I must admit that i am apparently not very observant since I didnt really notice she wasn't on anymore. :( but I also joined this thread probably after she left or right before? So not used to seeing jer every day like you all. I only saw her around the site occasionally but she seemed like a very nice person and funny too. I do hope she comes back on.

Also I tend not to read every post sometimes though i do try to now

Once you get them up and running are they much work?

Yep. How about I pass one on. She mentioned that I was lucky she answered the phone. Like us they don't usually answer if they don't recognize the number but due to some work her husband is doing with the Masons, they have been getting calls from all over the country and have been answering all calls. Then we were talking about phone scams. Her response to one caller:
"You have reached the Federal Bureau of Investigation fraud line. How may I help you?"

Oddly, the caller hung up. I think that is pretty rude!!

Maybe he will wean himself!

You would recognize her from the Mama Heating Pad thread she started.

That is hilarious! I gotta remember that lol I don't answer numbers I dont know either, which on my cell phone might be bad.

And yup, that's about the extent of where I knew her from! That and I read a few of the posts about her granddaughter and also followed thread about that for a bit. I think it was called special needs children and chickens? Or disabled or something like that. I was always touched by their story and the other people that posted there.
