The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

What, no :weeto go with that??

I took advantage of the "just over freezing" temps today to move about 2/3 cord of wood from the little barn to the enclosed porch. Have about 1 1/3 cord available just outside the front door again.

Gotta say, cold isn't always nice but quiet woodstove heat sure is!
I love woodstove heat! We need more wood for sure.

BULB!!!!! HEAT LAMP???!!!!! @JaeG, get yourself over to the Mama Heating Pad thread!!!!!!! Ditch the heat lamp, go "natural". Your chicks will be happier and so will you and your electric bill.

For some reason it doesn't work for quail. They just don't 'get' it! So I'll stick with the heatlamp for now - they'll only need it for a couple of weeks in this ridiculous heat that shows no sign of letting up anyway. We can't get heat pads like that here anyway - only seed mats (at great expense) or reptile ones.

I take it back - Ken CAN fix everything! Kendra has a disability advocate so Jenny called her. She got in touch with a furnace repair company and they agreed to come out. In the meantime my McGuiver husband came up with a plan. He finally found the kit he needed to fix it, but it was online and won’t be here for a week or so. So he went to an auto parts store in Powell and told them he needed a steel shaft 23 inches by whatever diameter it was, then went to another auto parts store and got a bearing that he thought would work. He got back to town and went right over there. He and Kenny got to work trying to rig this up. So the furnace guy shows up and Ken shows him what he thought, and what he was doing, then pulled up the kit he ordered on his phone to show the repairman. He told Ken that that was exactly what he would have ordered and exactly how he would have fixed it. So he left, and Ken is almost done getting the kids temporary heat. They’ll have to baby it along until the kit comes in. I have to run back over there in a few minutes, but just wanted to say - my husband ROCKS ! Not bad for a 70 year old man!

Doesn't Amazon ship everywhere? That is where i got mine.

Jae if it isn't one thing, it's another. :he. I think moving the lamp farther away should fix things :fl

I had to change the bulb. I had a 60W reflector one in the heatlamp and that was too hot, so I've put a normal, cheap 75W incandescent bulb (getting harder to find those) in and that's perfect.

I just need to vent. I've been noticing an increase in 'scare mongering' on this site and it really annoys and saddens me! I found someone who has just joined, first post - she'd found a food that her hens actually liked and wanted to share it, and she got crucified because it was a grain based one (and not a pellet one - so it couldn't be as nutritious)! Then someone else chimed in because it had kelp in it and that was 'really bad' to feed them since Fukushima because it would be full of radiation. Like anything that enters our food chain doesn't get rigorously tested. Honestly!!! I've been told I shouldn't feed our dog raw food because we'll all get salmonella (hasn't happened in almost 7 years and that was with babies in the house for some of that time who loved our dog). Someone else got told to get their humidity down immediately or they'd drown their chicks (it was near hatching for goodness sake). A bit of kindness goes a long way - which is why I love hanging out with you guys! :hugs Let me just say thank goodness for this thread!
