Most pool systems in New Zealand still run on chlorine. Then you're adding sulfuric acid to balance the pH and hardness of the water.
Most here as well though we are using Pristine Blue. More expensive but no daily checks and not chlorine smell and other irritating effects. But even that statement has a caveat. We dump chlorine shock in the pool in the spring to kill off any algae that is or will soon be growing and again before closing it down .... and sometimes, if it is hot for a long time, we will get algae trying to get a foothold so I probably end up tossing in half a gallon a couple of times a year.

Given the issue your DH's guys had, I will SURELY pay attention to what is in the stuff I may have to add for pH or hardness. Never really thought about it before.

:hugs Glad you're back safe Debby. Yes, poor baby - correction, babies. Kids deserve better than that! She needs to get hooked on chickens - then she could hatch 'babies' whenever she felt the need.

Well, my Button eggs have finally started pipping/hatching - they obviously wanted to share my birthday! None have hatched yet but we are off to my sister's soon for lunch. Hopefully they'll be ok until we get back. I don't have to worry about opening my incubator to turn the other eggs today - humidity is 75% outside the incubator! And it's HOT! Not my favourite kind of weather!
Happy Birthday! :wee:woot

Happy birthday, Jae!!!

As a spa repairman, Ken ran into people who managed to mess up their spas by adding the wrong chemicals. Their spa may have had one or the other, but they ended up basically buying what was on sale whether it was chlorine based or bromine and tossing them in, sometimes with a “more is better” attitude. Ph products made the entire mix even more downright dangerous. In our hot tub, we use all Leisure Time products, every change or addition, every time. Bromine is less harsh than chlorine, but all of them are still chemicals. I hope the pool guys are okay, and sounds like your hubby has been pushing for what is obviously needed - a training program for the field guys. Hope it happens!

Debby, my heart just breaks for those kids and the rough start they are getting in life. If it’s any consolation, maybe thinking about Jamie and Little Diane will help. They saw me press charges against their mom - my daughter - follow through, get through the foster care certification process so we could get foster care of them, then celebrated with us as a family when we were finally awarded full guardianship. Jamie said later that seeing someone go to bat for them so hard made all the difference for them. We just gave them a safe place, love and trust - what they made of their lives they did on their own. They could have let all that they’d been through become an excuse for bad behavior and bad choices.

I’ll say an extra prayer for those babies tonight, that there are open hearts and a home for them to find a safe haven, and that have enough strength within them to use what they’ve endured as a base for growth.

I had to change the bulb. I had a 60W reflector one in the heatlamp and that was too hot, so I've put a normal, cheap 75W incandescent bulb (getting harder to find those) in and that's perfect.

I just need to vent. I've been noticing an increase in 'scare mongering' on this site and it really annoys and saddens me! I found someone who has just joined, first post - she'd found a food that her hens actually liked and wanted to share it, and she got crucified because it was a grain based one (and not a pellet one - so it couldn't be as nutritious)! Then someone else chimed in because it had kelp in it and that was 'really bad' to feed them since Fukushima because it would be full of radiation. Like anything that enters our food chain doesn't get rigorously tested. Honestly!!! I've been told I shouldn't feed our dog raw food because we'll all get salmonella (hasn't happened in almost 7 years and that was with babies in the house for some of that time who loved our dog). Someone else got told to get their humidity down immediately or they'd drown their chicks (it was near hatching for goodness sake). A bit of kindness goes a long way - which is why I love hanging out with you guys! :hugs Let me just say thank goodness for this thread!

That's awful :(

People are ridiculous. I feed a grain one too (arent all feeds?) and crumblet though usually do pellet, and don't do fermented feed.

Evening Friends :frow

Just popped in on my way to do my greets.

Aw gees Jae I hope you get your brooder woes sorted in time :fl

N F C Thank You! I love Ta-Da! Nice to see him again!

Go Ken! :clap

Jae I hear ya and will mini vent myself .. when I comment with ‘what I do’ and that I respect others may do it differently, I now do not follow the thread. I have shared my opinion and then I drop out unless I am alerted that I have been quoted directly. I get a little frustrated reading all the ‘why you should not do that’, ‘why what I said is apparently wrong’ and ‘my way or the highway’ ;)

Anyways, just saw this on FB .. definitely nightmare material! I do believe that is a broom head it is hanging on to.

Good plan and wow scary

Hi everyone

I'm Michelle. I live in Alberta Canada.
I'm a byc addict as well as a chicken addict. I live on 99 acres with my spouse, 2 pigs, 4 buckeye hens & a roo, and 3 cats. 60 acres of my land is alfalfa.

Hey nice to see you in this one

Cats? Did someone say cats? View attachment 1242665

@Michelle Farmer-Brown I have 3 housecats and DH has 3 golf course cats (mousers). @sunflour has a cat named Buddy and he bakes gingerbread houses (and wins contests with them). @sourland has a former feral that has adopted him. @bruceha2000 has a whole herd of cats (but he says they belong to the females in his house). @Teila has 2 cats (one of them has a mustache). @DigMyChicks has 2? 3? (not sure, but one has the same name as one of mine, Opie). @rjohns39 you have a cat too, don't you? @CapricornFarm has cats.

Lots of cats around here!

Don't forget Luna!

One note on power converters, they run the entire time they are plugged in regardless of whether or not you're using electricity. I learned that the expensive way.:barnie

Wait @Blooie all is not lost. You have two choices other than pitching the chili. 1) bring it back to a boil then let it cool as you normally would and bag it, then freeze it as normal. 2) bag and freeze, just know you'll need to bring it to a solid boil when it comes out of the freezer.

Just because bacteria can grow at 50* doesn't mean it automatically does, and most bacteria that does will die at 212* Only one I know that doesn't requires an oxygen free environment to grow.

ok, I know the food science geeks will beat me up over this one:oops:

Good idea

2-3 is accurate...shop cat was brought in due to the very cold weather(by hubby)and he has not brought him back out yet.:rolleyes:2 strays outside also that we feed but can’t tame...5 total!

I did the same thing a couple weeks ago but with chicken noodle soup. I chanced it and we ate it and we did not die.:gig

Aww

Well folks, all I can say is NEVER take 4 days off from BYC. Didn't plan on it, but it happened. I've finally cleared my queue, greeted everyone I missed and caught up on most of the threads I follow. And I have about a dozen new folks waiting. And a couple hundred pages marked to read later on my normal threads.:th

I was/am behind too

View attachment 1243099 View attachment 1243100 When the man who fixes the unfixable decides to make a cake - ignoring the Kitchenaid mixer sitting right there under that red cover in the foreground - and right next to him. Somebody help me.....

:lau

Yep. Started and then quit :he except for Trill, she is still on the job. Hoping the other girls will get back to work. It does look like the Exchequer Leghorns' combs are starting to get some color. They had gone for nice and red when they were laying to really pale. Not something a 6 month old chicken is supposed to do!!

Oh come on Blooie, you HID it under that red cover with the KitchenAid label on it, how is he supposed to see it there?? :gig

I THINK 3 of mine are laying now but only get 2 eggs a day so idk

I know...I shouldn’t expect more from the guy who opens the cabinet, moves the crackers to look for the crackers, then yells”Hey, honey...where are the crackers?”

Lol my dad misses stuff in front of his face or will jist ask without looking. Brother too.

But pale combs can be an indication of either....

True but my chickens have always had pale combs when they weren't laying. Soon as they decide it is time to get back to work, they redden up again. And since they are reddening, I ASSUME the increased daylight has their hormones revving up.

The same thing happens with mine. I think it's a normal chicken biology thing or something. I mean, they're pale when their pullets. Mine get pale when they aren't laying and now 3 are bright red which is why I think 3 are laying now.

It seems very little is made with quality anymore...if it’s cheap and breaks you have to buy new.

Sadly true

I think that's the intent. Although I think it's finally starting to backfire. Now, instead of buying another of the same, people are buying a different brand. A lot of people are starting to realize "You get what you pay for" is a real thing.

Yupppp they want you to buy more so they make more money. Consumer culture. Everything disposable.

I loved the "Lion King," and "Aladdin,"

Same! I'm not sure I watched Aladdin that much but I'm sure I probably did. Loved Lion King though. And I love Hercules too. Especially loved 101 Dalmatians and Lady & The Tramp. And jungle book. I loved all the animal ones LOL

The Rawlins roads weren't too bad, the interstate was slow-going but we did ok. I did get to watch the guy that lives next door almost straddle his car while pulling into his garage...got the front tires in but the back tires just spun.

It doesn't take long to get behind around here!

Yupppp. You all talk so much. :p that's a good thing though.

Well, that's over and done with. The judge gave the guy 3-5 years in the pen for the golf cart theft and 3-5 years for the possession of a controlled substance (he was carrying that while he was out on bond from the theft charge). Sentences will be served concurrently.

It's just all so stupid and such a waste. I don't feel sorry for this guy but I do feel sorry for the baby girl his girlfriend had 6 weeks ago. What a way for her to start life.

How sad.

The new mom has her own problems. This is kid #6 for her...anytime she feels the need to get off drugs, she gets pregnant as a motivator.

That poor little baby, just makes me want to cry :hit

Sometimes I really don't like people very much.

Wow that's awful. :(

I thought this was about to be her first kid. Gee I don't know anything. What a sad life for all the kids involved.

:hugs Glad you're back safe Debby. Yes, poor baby - correction, babies. Kids deserve better than that! She needs to get hooked on chickens - then she could hatch 'babies' whenever she felt the need.

What? Today (which is tomorrow for us in USA) is your birthday? With the date difference, I don't know whether to wish you a happy one today or tomorrow! I'll go with now for sure (who knows what I'll remember tomorrow)...

Enjoy lunch with your sister and all the rest the day has to bring!

And here's a little b-day gift I just whipped together for you J...
View attachment 1243839

Thanks everyone - time zones sure make for confusion on special days!

@N F C I love that cat funny! The pallet creation is lovely too! Very thoughtful! My DH can tell you all about stoopid! He works for a pool and spa business, looking after the retail side. They also look after people's pools and spas and two of their pool 'techs' managed to mix up two chemicals yesterday and create mustard gas! The customer who owned the pool had managed to put the wrong chemical on the wrong feeder tube, so the tech has poured in the acid, thinking it was the right container, except it was the chlorine one!:barnie

Customer was fine - it was the pool techs that were there. One threw the container into the pool thinking that would stop it becoming more of a hazard, but hubby discovered last night, after much research, that it doesn't break down in water (like it will in air) and it is heavier than water. Hopefully neither pool tech has developed any sypmtoms as it can take 24 hours to show up (sounds like super nasty stuff). It would help if there were better safety procedures in place (like poor hubby has been pushing for) but anyway. Sometimes it takes a situation such as this to create some change.

Wow how scary

Sadly, it is often hard to find something that will last even at a much higher cost. I'd rather pay 4x the cost something once that will last 4X as long as a POS "affordable" item 4 times.

I'm surprised they even use chemicals that can combine to make something that dangerous.

Happy birthday @JaeG. I gave up on cards, so I didn't get you onw. I keep losing them before plan to send them. The last one was my sister's BDay in November. I bought the card TWO days before I was going to send it. I have NO idea where it is.

Exactly and sometimes the cheaper or more reasonable one ends up being the better one.

Sounds like me and Christmas cards!

Most pool systems in New Zealand still run on chlorine. Then you're adding sulfuric acid to balance the pH and hardness of the water. It's fine if they are going in separately, but if a customer has put the wrong barrel of chemical on the wrong feeder pipe and the pool tech goes to top up the barrel and both chemicals are mixed - not good!

@Teila that cockatiel pic is so cute! And that's exactly what they'd do!

Why did the customer do it?

There are many people like her. At least she stayed off drugs while pregnant!! My niece has had 2 children and has lost both. My oldest sister adopted our nieces second child. He was with my sister from pretty early on as a foster child. The whole situation is a long drawn out affair which ended in sister adopting. The father gave up rights as he ended up in prison. I told sister good luck. She’s mid 50’s and has an almost 2 year old and a 15 year old.

A similar story with an Aunt of Mine. She had 4 children and had to raise Three of their children. There story was a mix of drugs and psychological issues

Algae goes in pools?

And all this drug stuff is sad, I think I quoted cause I wanted to reply to them together but then the quote split them up so I'll reply here haha

So.

All these stories are really sad. :(

I don't about other areas but around here we have a huge opioid epidemic and especially big problems with heroin. So many people dying. So many young people too. Like 20s etc. One kid I graduated high school with. There's a lot of kids being raised by grandparents because their parents are dead or in jail or getting high somewhere. It's really sad. :(
