Thanks. I hadn't thought of that. So bring inside in winter then maybe? I still prefer slightly deeper ponds though but idk. Not too deep I guess so I can see the fish.
I think you want some depth in at least part of it even if you bring the fish inside in the winter. Shallow water gets hot, that can be bad for the fish. Since mine is a man made farm pond, generally speaking without any incoming water other than rain, it warms up and gets full of algae. It is nasty. Then, if we get lucky it cools down and rains a bunch and the algae dies off some. It would be better if there was a spring that fed it year round but that isn't the case. The spring only feeds it a bit in the spring time.

Thanks, that's true. How deep would you say? There's not really a good spot to put it atm. I might put it on the hill if we clear some trees.

I hadn't thought of any of that. So would I need a oump or filter or something?

Is it this?

Or is it something else?

I feel kind of stupid but I haven't had math in years haha

OMG!
I just got home and went to close the pop door and there was a skunk making itself at home inside the coop!! All of the birds were calmly on their roosts like nothing was out of the ordinary. It moseyed on out almost right away. There were eggs in the nest box, but it didn't touch them.
My silkie sleeps under the nest boxes, so she went out to the run while the skunk was inside. Now she's as happy as can be out there ( she never goes out into the run) and she won't come inside. The people door for the run is frozen into 3" of ice, so I can't get in there to get her. I don't want to leave the pop door open in case the skunk comes back.

I hadnt thought of that but good point
Gold fish can overwinter in a pond if it is deep enough. If you do make a pond, don't slope the bottom at an angle, have sort of steps...shallow area, drop down, flat area, drop down. Its too hard to walk in a pond with a sloping bottom. My pond was 1 foot deep in the shallow end and three feet in the deep end, but that was FL so no freezing. 14'x14' . Took me a long time to dig it!

The skunk did not sound like it was acting too out of the normal range. Around here a high percentage of skunks are rabid. Bats too.

Skunks acting strange--like our during the day or staggering is a sign of rabbies

There was a skunk around here tonight by the smell of things. Never saw it though.
