The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

I only have one relative who should probably never be allowed near a canner or canning jar. She takes everything beyond literally. That's my wonderful niece, Shanna. Poor girl. You know those sunshades that we can put in our car windows to block the sun when we park? Know how most of them say, "Remove before driving"? Yeah, they put that on there for the Shannas of the world.

We were having a family barbeque at Linda's house. Bev had brought over a huge green salad but no dressings. Since we also needed ice, Shanna and I volunteered to pick some dressing up when we went to the store. Well, we hit Sunshine...she looked and looked but didn't find the dressing she wanted. So we hit Hy-Vee. No dressing. We hit the Red Owl. Nope. We stopped at Omar's. No dressing. Finally I looked at her and said, "Exactly what kind of dressing are we looking for, Shan?" She wrinkled her forehead and said, "Grant and I went out for dinner last night and I had the best salad dressing - it was called 'House Dressing'." Somebody help me.............

Are beans hard to grow? I've thought about getting them but then I worried they might be a little bit of a pain with having to stake them or whatever. I'm even nervous about making the hills for my cucumbers haha
You can make a trellis with a few (depending on how long the trellis is) T-posts and welded wire fencing. I made a "hoop" trellis and planted pole beans on both sides of one "wall" and cucumbers on the other. Six 7' T-posts, 2 pieces of 4' 2x4 welded wire cut 16' long it is 4' wide, 8' long and about 7' at the peak, no roof support needed. The fencing is wired to the T-posts. You don't need to hill cucumbers.

We haven’t planted anything yet. Ken’s not sure now if he wants to grow any veggies at all this year, since we travel so much we won’t be around to take care of it.
Plant stuff that isn't going to want lots of attention!

Hahahaha OMG! Poor girl is right! :lau

I think I would have possibly caused frustrations but in a different way... I'm very indecisive and tend to grab multiple brands of the same thing to "try" or different flavors cause I can't decide, etc.

But at least I know what house dressing, house wine, etc. means lol

But if it was me I probably would have picked up a few of the most basic flavors, you know like ranch, italian, blue cheese, a vinaigrette or something for everyone and been on my way, or if it was just family and I knew what everyone liked, grabbed thatm

I think our family got lucky then LOL

Thanks! That's a good idea. So do you make a hoop? If so, could you use a cattle panel?

I'm glad cucumbers don't need to be hilled. I was going by what the label said I guess.

Bruce, that ain't happening. We don't grow anything around here unless it's needy - kids, grandkids, dogs, chickens........ :lau

:lau

Do you still have dogs?

Fine then, just plant some tolerant flowers so you have something pretty to come home to.

Good suggestion.

Great LB!

Whatever they want to get rid of ??

Absolutely. I made it with the welded wire fencing because:
  1. I had it
  2. I had no way to get cattle panels home
I now have roof racks and I made 12' long 2x4s that I can attach to the rack and carry 4x8 sheet stuff and cattle panels.

Cattle panels are a bit harder to work with since they are a lot stiffer. You pretty much need 2 people to get it in place between the T-posts because they spring back forcefully. The 2x4 welded wire does have the advantage of closer spacing for the tendrils on plants to grab. On the other hand when you see that bean or cucumber from the opposite side, you can't reach through and pick it.
Here is a picture of it.

Idk, I figured it was just stuff they make themselves or like only serve there? Didn't know exactly what it meant but usually cheaper and you can't buy it at a store lol

And thanks for the info and pic. That helps. Ooohh. It's taller than I was thinking. I was picturing it lower to the ground for some reason. Can see why the welded wire might be better. I think we have some vinyl coated. And that's pretty. I like the arch thingy. Could you put flowers on it?

Anything that climbs!
It is tall because it is only 4' wide. I did that so I (at ~6' 2") could walk under it to pick from both sides and the Fortex beans grow tall. I was picking some that were hanging down from above. Those sure are easy to see :)

I did the same thing with cattle panels over the 3 blueberry bushes, I think 6 feet wide. I still need to put bird netting over it once the plants start making fruit so the birds don't get to them. The bushes aren't all that productive. There were here when we bought the place, don't even know what variety of blueberries they are. It isn't nearly as high since I need to get to both sides of the bushes, no standing headroom for me under there.
