Nope. You can tell as soon as they dry off after hatch. If they have chipmunk stripes they're not pure buckeye, or will not be quality/SOP. I have 3 that do not have the stripes so far. Here's hoping that they're pullets.
Will that be DQ or points off?

Are you working on conformation and color at the same time? Most recommend working on conformation first and then color.

I hope you do well at the shows!

Oh, I'm not planning on showing. Just trying to preserve the breed. Hoping to sell chicks & hatching eggs, and want to make sure that customers receive true to breed birds. So, once they grow I'll look at the conformation more. I know that the roo placed 5th at the provincial heritage breeds show, so he's not a perfect example of the breed. One of the chantecler roos is very close to a perfect example. His back end is a bit narrow. The other chantecler roo has saddle tufts that shouldn't be there.

5th is good!

Good job on breeding to sop standards

Good morning eveeyone!
Layla is doing just fine and adjusting to her new life. Now that she knows what the bottle is, she is really going after it. Was worried she wouldn't "take to it". At least that's behind us! I can already tell she's going to be a hand full or two!

Everyone make it a Great Day!

The hand reared red deer I've met here have been the sweetest creatures ever and I'd love a few as pets. Layla is such a cutie. :love I'm green with envy you know! I miss having babies about.

Michelle, that's a cute little chick even if it's not quite the right colouring. :love

:weeSchool's out for summer!

Any summer plans?

Skip Waikiki beach. It is just a scrawny thing in front of a lot of high rise hotels. Funny how they never show that in pictures. Nothing to see in the water either.

Thanks for the tip!!

Yep, very beautiful but oh so over run with tourists. :lau
I spent many months on all 7 of the islands.

Oh I can imagine!! Any particular parts you recommend or is it all good? Ha the shots they take are gorgeous

Also I was thinking it'd be cool to visit some of the filming locations. I found this article. Thoughts?

Is Kualoa Ranch worth going to?

Also they showed Koko Head Stairs on one episode and I think there's no way in a million years I'd ever be able to do those :lau

Anyway, sorry for 5 trillion questions, not sure how much you remember or if you even did the touristy stuff lol

What were you in Hawaii for? Military?

Anyone want a piece of peanut butter cake? Peanut butter has protein so this counts as a power breakfast, right?

That looks so delicious! My family doesn't like peanut butter flavored desserts but I love them.

The garden is starting too look like a garden. Just picked and hoed weeds around the asparagus...not enjoyable. All the new stuff I planted came up thank goodness...gotta throw in a couple flowers also :D

poor fresh air deprived chickens

They still have fresh air, I put them back in the run not the coop. They always have access to the run since I don't close the pop door at night. Could never lock them in the coop, especially during the day..

But I let them out in the yard (large yard) to free range and normally I come back inside and do whatever and let them stay out until dark, sometimes it's a few hours, sometimes all afternoon, depends, but this time I stayed outside and watched them the whole 2 hours so I was getting kinda tired even though they're hilariously entertaining.

That said, I will say I haven't been free ranging them lately because of predator concerns and also because they only moved into the new coop a month ago so I wanted them to know home first but they always have a large run and sunshine so no fresh air concerns there. Fresh bugs and grass concerns maybe. :p but they have been loving all the new dirt to dust and sun bathe in :)

I think I'm going to start letting them out to free range more though because they were just SO happy out there and they really seem to love it.

I've just been worried about predators because there's been a fox around a couple of times already testing the new coop, tons of hawks, and my brother just saw a HUGE coyote the other day only like 1-2 miles from here in his neighborhood. He says it was like 80 pounds and looked like a wolf or German Shepherd. Just stared at him and kept walking. So that made me really nervous. We've had more issues with foxes, hawks, and raccoons than coyotes; the coyotes seem to more stay in the front yard, but it's still scary. They have a lot over there because I think they like the marsh. But that's a big freaking coyote.

Anyway, long story short, I am thinking the chickens are safer with me watching them and I can't watch them all day but I'm thinking even just a couple hours would make them happy.

I might be being paranoid too cause I know some people let them out in the morning and let them stay out all day but I could never do that. Unless maybe I added some more alert breeds or a rooster. The dog usually is very alert but he's getting older and sickly. I think possibly going deaf too. I could let him stay outside with them but I don't fully trust him. Although with as sick as he's been, he probably wouldn't hurt them.

Sorry, I'm rambling now haha didnt mean to write a novel but wanted to explain, though I'm sure you were maybe joking?, and then once I start talking about my animals I can't shut up lol sorry
