The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

I'm not too sure they could talk though if this is any indication! :gig

I'm going to be relieved all the paperwork is done...I've been jumping those hurdles for the past month. Guess the physical work will start soon.

We're going to do the renovation first. It's a small house and we don't want to trip over unnecessary stuff.

How about you Michelle...Friday is your big day too! Are you excited to get to this next big stage?
Oh yeah! I'm planning on getting in there on Saturday and start demolition. Going to have to rent a kerosene heater first though. It's really nippy out there today!
Here's the centre beam going in this morning.

How do you overthink that? Mine is just a small metal bread pan that I found in the barn. I screwed it to the outside of the coop at hen level.

Well, because I saw all these cool PVC ideas so then I went to Lowe's and bought PVC pipe. I was gonna buy the 5 foot sections but for the 4 inch pipe it's $20 so then I settled on two 2 foot sections of 4 inch pipe and two 90 degree elbows but then my dad and brother said it would all just pour out if I did that, which I kind of thought it would but wasn't sure how to fix it, so now I've decided that idea is stupid and I'm going to return the pipe. It was like $26, with tax it was like $27.50ish. So $28 unnecessary dollars spent. Although I do think a 5 foot PVC feeder would be cool and last a while but I've decided that's dumb too and also I remembered I already have two buckets we made I think last year but never used (I felt bad cause they seemed scared to stick their heads in) so I will just use those. Of course they do need to be cleaned up first because they've been sitting in a dog house outside and are dirty but it shouldn't take much to clean them. Probably just some water and/or vinegar. I am going to use both buckets because I used 4 inch pipe so I could only fit one feed hole per bucket. Realistically I probably could have gone with 3 inch pipe but I thought I read some chickens can't fit their heads in it or like if they have big combs and wattles. But oh well, maybe now 2 can stick their heads in at once. I'm gonna put one on each end of the run. They're 5 gallon buckets so between the two of them, they should hold a whole bag I think or at least half a bag. Going to go back to the bucket waterer too. The feeder isn't really a big deal cause they don't seem to waste it and it lasts a pretty long time but the waterer gets so gross after like a day. Although actually for winter, I think I might use the heated bowl again. I loved that thing. But anyway, sorry, back to the grit and oyster shell. Right now I have a plastic double pet bowl. Works pretty well but the part it is in is not covered so it gets wet and sometimes I waste it dumping it out or I try to drain it but it's gross. Also I have one chicken in particular who loves to throw the oyster shell everywhere. So I wanted something new. But I've decided to do both. Keep it and just put drain holes in the bottom like I read about (brilliant, why didn't I think of that? It's so ridiculously simple) AND make a new one. I've read of people using cans and stuff which at first I didn't like and wanted to do the PVC but now I think it's a pretty good idea and free. I found a perfect container to use. It's plastic but none of the coffee cans are empty yet and it's good size. It was an old turkey and berry jerky dog treat container I found. So I just got a nail and put it in the coop today. I'm a little worried I put it too high but I'm sure they can reach it fine plus I'm keeping the other one.

The new design. And those are the smallest chickens and also there was a low spot in front of the window where they dug some hay out which made this look higher than it is so I fixed that so I think they'll be fine.

Current design. The stuff in the forefront is what I dumped last time and is outside the run so not the chickens fault but if you look at the last picture, you can see quite a lot thrown out around the bowl already. The chicken on the right, Angel, is the culprit.

I have 2 from a couple years ago hanging on the coop. I put the square one up the other day, but I want to put the “Waddle On In” one on the duck gate, so I have to take another one off first. And I used screws, so haven’t swapped them yet. They are actually decent little metal (painted alum?) signs. One has faded some, but I think they are cute. Especially for free.

Here’s one of the older ones

Wow AWESOME coop!!!

I forgot to come on here yesterday to wish Debby a Happy Birthday. :frow Hopefully you had a good day.

I stopped following this thread a bit ago because I couldn't keep up, but I still look in occasionally. I'm a slow going country girl and this thread is like the big city where stuff move too fast for me and makes me dizzy. :th
