Whew! I’m beat! But it was such a fun, fun day I can’t wait for Christmas dinner now!! They did absolutely everything themselves, and learned some new skills in the process. Katie got all of her relish ingredients in the big Kitchenaid food processor, then stood wayyyyyy back, reaching for the button then pulling back. I said nothing. She got a little closer. I said nothing. Then just as her hand finally reached the button I screamed, “Katie!! Watch out, it’s gonna blow!” She jumped 10 feet. Ahh, it was classic, I tell ya! Mean, but hilarious. I do have my moments! Eventually she did turn it on and get it done, and enjoyed seeing it all transform. In fact, if I’d let her keep going, we’d be having cranberry juice for dinner. She kept saying, “This is so cool!” Score - Kids, 0; Gramma,1. Katie faces off with the food processor:

Evan’s baked beans are the things dreams are made of. He got the soaked beans in the pot with his cut up browned bacon, and I had to warn him that I measure by taste, not kitchen tools. So “how much mustard” was a dime sized squirt to start. “Ketchup?” Oh, about dollar’s worth. “Brown sugar?” A handful. “Molasses?” Drizzle and stir until it turns brown. All done, now taste. What does it need? And by golly, he adjusted until he got it!! Into the oven it went, and his grin would have melted an iceberg.

Then he made the cheese ball, again by look, taste, and feel. Green onions, pineapple, and pecans went into the 4 blocks of cream cheese, and he wasn’t real happy about sticking his hands in there to mix. He mixed, knocked the goopy layers of it off his fingers, then got right back in there and mixed some more. I stood by with our supply of plastic tasting spoons, he’d say, “Okay, bite” and I’d give him a taste of it. (His hands were to goopy to manipulate a spoon). He had all of his ingredients in his mise en plas, so he’d order what he thought he needed and I’d add it. Perfection! He got done, and was washing his hands. He told me he hated having to mix it like that. I said, “Well, you could have used this big old spurtle like I do, but watching you do it this way was far more entertaining.” Score so far - Kids, 0; Gramma, 2. Evan “hand mixing” the cheese ball.

They shared the stuffing making. That went well until every time one of them reached for the can of beer. I’d whip up the phone, threaten to take photos of them drinking, and post it on FB. Ended up where neither of them would touch it, so I told them, ”No beer, no stuffing” Evan finally reached for it, and when he picked it up, I snapped. That was another one where they had to get their hands in there to mix. The roaster was overflowing, so mixing was tough without it spilling all over. Finally Katie looked at me and asked, “Do you have another secret spoon hidden away that we could be using instead of our hands? You do, don’t you?” Well, I gave them each a spoon and it took them just seconds to figure out why THAT wasn’t gonna work. Score- Kids, 0; Gramma, 3. Hand mixing a full roaster pan of stuffing.

I had to knock off and take Jen to the doctor at 3. but by then Grampa was home from his 2 day trip and able to take over pie class. I don’t have details about how that went, but when I got home the pies were done and everyone was still alive.

You guys, sorry, I went on too long again, but it was such an incredible time today. Those two kids were determined that I was not going to stress my back, and they succeeded. That only thing I stressed was my giggle button and my heart. I don’t know what I did to deserve them, but I am so grateful! After almost 60 years of making Thanksgiving dinners, it was beginning to become a chore. These two little people put the joy back into it. And hugs on top of it. Does life get any better? Evan and Katie with their masterpieces. (Note: All pots, pans and bowls are larger than they appear. Much, much larger) Katie with her relish, Evan with his cheese ball, behind him his baked beans, and behind her half of the stuffing.

My big question of the day...why is that no matter how long the turkey sits in the fridge to defrost, it's still partially frozen when I'm ready to put it in the oven?

Every year, without fail. This year's turkey is just a tad over 10 pounds, been sitting in the fridge since Monday and it's still half way frozen. Stupid bird!
