Its just that its very hard to judge temperament by photos alone. You have to go meet the dog and evaluate them in person Personally.
This last photo of Fenway shows him straining at the leash intensely forward tail up and in mid Chuff.... An excieted dog for sure....
Question is is that the exception to the rule or the rule of his behavior.
Dont get me wrong I had a dog with very strong prey drive.... Greyhound.... He would chase down my guinea pigs in the yard but as soon as they stopped running hed find something to peee on..... Silly goof. Thats why I put lengths of pvc drainiage pipe in the yard.... Soon as they went in he did something else.
But I also had a border collie cross kill every one of my first flock of chickens.... ONe by one because the dead one wouldnt run any more.

Hmm that’s true. Thankfully he is local unlike most dogs listed around here (they usually ship them up from the south) so I could go meet him. Was also looking at some other dogs though on there and there’s a few other dogs that I think might be good too.
But that’s definitely true. Looking back at the pics there are definitely at least a few where he appears excited. But then again he could have just been watching something. I mean, if people had taken pictures of Gator mid bark or in his alert stance they would think he was high energy too or aggressive or whatever but really he was the laziest, most mellow, gentle dog, so I guess I’d need to meet Fenway and/or ask his fosters and figure out what his actual personality is. Of course Gator didn’t have Border Collie in him. This dog could be more driven.
Oh wow that’s good he didn’t hurt them!! I think sighthounds are more about the chase though. BCs might be different.
Oh wow that is awful!! I’m sorry.
maybe Fenway would be different.
Says he’s very friendly and loves everyone and everything but of course people and dogs are very different from prey animals like chickens or even just small animals like cats. But fortunately we can keep the chickens totally contained if need be when he’s out and/or keep him in when they are out so they can still free range if he’s going to be an issue. That’s what we usually did with Gator. So if I do get him, I’ll have to see what he’s like with them first. The cat can be kept totally separate too. But I’m also looking at other dogs. I agree..string drive period with Border Collie in him! I thought I could have one..Border Collie/mix... be a buddy for my Schnauzer.. That dog played so rough! Poor Schnauzer came in with bloody bites often. Had to place him in a home that would work out better.
When I told our vet that I had to place the Border Collie he wasn't surprised. He has cattle..so..border collies were their .. gathering work dogs. He said they often had to pull a dog or two off of a cattle once they got them to the gates. Smart though!!
Oh wow I had no idea they were such tough little dogs!!! Sounds like a good thing that you rehomed that dog. Your poor schnauzer!

I wonder if you maybe have tougher BCs in that area though? Working line ones maybe and/or being bred to be cattle dogs/tough?? I hear the working line ones are a lot more intense and driven than show ones. And I thought they were usually used for sheep and more mellow stock? So surely they wouldn’t maul them or be too bad? There must be a lot of variation in the breed maybe??
But I imagine most of the ones from a rural/country setting like this guy probably is are probably the working kind.
He might not even be BC though. Could be Lab/Pyrenees or something maybe? He seems big and stocky. Idk. Does he have the BC look??
There are some other dogs I am looking at too though.
