The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Guess there are multiple ways of preparing them.

The only time I've seen escargot they were served to someone in a restaurant. It was just a plate of shells served up with a little cup of butter. Watching someone dig them out of their shells left an indelible impression on me. :sick
I guess my aunt was a pro cuz that little guy came right out! She was a VP at a bank and traveled extensively so I got to try a lot of food that I might not have otherwise because she’d take us out to places we probably wouldn’t have tried without her. My dad used to be a major foodie too, plus he grew up during the depression so lots of variety from very cheap cuts of meat like heart and kidneys to abalone and oysters on the half shell.

In Germany, they cooked the snails in a skillet, then put them in fake shells with a little cheese on top and then popped them in the salamander to brown the cheese. They served them in a dish with a well that ran around the dish and had holes the shells fit perfectly into. They filled the well with garlic butter for dipping and of course served them with bread for dipping.

Morning chores are done and it's a gray, windy, chilly day (41*) so I'm inside for a while. Time to catch up!

The meatballs look delicious IM! I was telling DH about them yesterday and he wants me to dig up the Finnish meatball recipe for an upcoming dinner. See what you started!

You're a brave woman Sue! I like to try new things but don't know that I'd try Durian.

Hi Slacker! :gig Nice to see you today!

No agitation allowed...agitation isn't good for my peace of mind!

Morning cheepteach, glad you're ready for the rain! Have a good one :)

Glad to hear it Rene!
Hi Debby, right back at you! I haven’t gotten much accomplished today either.

Hey DMC, here's that enchilada recipe we talked about.

Easy Sour Cream Chicken Enchiladas

1 1/2 lb. shredded chicken (I poached 2 breasts in broth and shredded but a rotisserie chicken would be easy to use)
1 onion, diced
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
8-10 flour tortillas (8" size)
2 Cups Monterey Jack or Pepper Jack cheese, shredded
1/4 Cup butter
1/4 Cup flour
15-oz can chicken broth
1 Cup sour cream
4-oz can chopped green chilies (mild or hot, your choice)

* Pre-heat oven to 375*
* Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat and add chicken and onion (you want the onion to be tender).
* Spray 9x13" baking dish with no-stick spray. Heat tortillas in the microwave a few seconds to soften.
* On each tortilla add about 1/4 Cup of the chicken mixture and about 2 Tablespoons cheese. Roll tightly and place seam side down in the baking dish.
* In a medium saucepan melt the butter. Then add the flour and whisk together about 4 minutes. Add the chicken broth and continue to whisk continuously until thickened.
* Remove from heat and stir in sour cream and chopped chilies.
* Pour over assembled enchiladas. Top with remaining 1 Cup cheese.
* Bake about 20 minutes or until golden and bubbling.

This isn't anything fancy but DH and I liked them.

Thanks Debby! It sounds delicious.

Last night I discovered that there are actually 2 rats. I'd say they are a pair as one is quite a bit larger than the other.
Have you found a nest? Where there are two there are usually many more. Glad you got the one.

@Grammy60 - think my 'honey do list' includes washing windows. I hate the ladder.
Time to replace the windows with the kind that tilt in for cleaning.

The other was very different, it was the day just my son and I took a train ride to Dachau. A totally sobering day.
30+ years ago I went to France for 2 weeks of work then took the train to Zurich where my Dad and stepmother met me. They were vacationing for a month. Saw lots of cool things, have a "Bim Bam" clock from Munich. We were going to stop at Dachau on our way north but when we got to the turn off the major road we all decided we didn't think we could handle it.

Kids like the familiar, does your niece remember the German grilled cheese?
More importantly, what kind of cheese was on it? Surely not the orange cheddar she was probably used to.

but I had only heard about Durian fruit!! Oh my goodness 🤢 I could not get the taste out of my mouth all day!!!
I had to look that one up. Interesting that it was not a good experience since this is the description I found:
"Durian lovers say it has a sweet, custardy taste, with the texture of creamy cheesecake. Flavors often attributed to the durian fruits are caramel and vanilla."
That sounds TASTY!

I worked in fast food and I had to grab slimy oysters out of a can to prepare them
Somehow I don't connect oysters with fast food. I don't recall ever seeing them on any fast food menu, usually only in "higher end" restaurants.

Hi Bruce :frow

I'd always heard the smell is what turns a lot of people off durian so I did a quick look up on Wiki and found this:
"Some people regard the durian as having a pleasantly sweet fragrance, whereas others find the aroma overpowering with an unpleasant odour. The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, and has been described variously as rotten onions, turpentine, and raw sewage. The persistence of its odour, which may linger for several days, has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in Southeast Asia."

Sounds pretty powerful!
