I'll bet your right! Blue herons and geese frequent our ponds, and we occasionally have ducks too.

Interesting! That makes more sense than them bringing in live fish. Whatever goes in the mouth goes down, they aren't in the business of delivering babies.Hi Janey, I just did a quick search about minnows showing up in ponds and found this:
"The most common way minnows get into ponds is from freshwater birds, such as ducks, geese, or herons. These birds sometimes have minnow eggs stuck to their feet and they will fall off once they land in your pond."
My girls don't like snow, they won't even go out in it, so I imagine blocking the wind and little snow makes your run more inviting.Plus, the girls seemed to spend more time out of the coop and in the run, guess they were comfortable.
That is what I use. Went into last winter with 20 adult birds, not a problem, just pour water in it every morning. I have 25 now but I'm sure the dog dish will still be fine for them.I use a heated dog bowl for the winter waterer, it works well for my little flock of 5. You have a much bigger flock so that might not be practical for you.
I do have some heavy plastic wrap, so I'm going to keep that in mind. I'm not sure the heated bowl would work for us, I have some dummies that would step in it and get frost bite. Almost always have younger chicks around too, some of my hens don't realize that they shouldn't hatch in the fall and winter. We wrapped the run with heavy duty plastic last year and that really saved me some snow shoveling. Plus, the girls seemed to spend more time out of the coop and in the run, guess they were comfortable. Wrapping will be a definite to-do for this winter too.
