The Ninja Poodles

How sad, DC.

Abby, apriocot poodle, after her ears got better

My two little poodles are not perfection either. Abby is apricot and came from a farm. She was part of a litter of nine from miniature parents. She and one other were 1/3rd the size of the rest of the puppies. At 8 weeks old she weighed barely two pounds. She had a horrendous ear infection and her her ears stunk so bad I couldn't cuddle her but for just a moment. It took us several days to get all the hair out of her ears and to treat her properly. It was so gross! I can't imagine how she spent those first weeks of her life being a happy puppy living in the pain she had to be in. Her ears had large amount of dried blood and yuck in the fur. We could only pull so much at a time before she because aggitated and crying. Eventually it was done and we won the battle. She has never had ear problems again.

This was 1 week after Rhett came home with me.

My little Rhett was actually not the pup I was supposed to get. The pup I had reseved died and there were no other pups but one super runt from the set of chocolate mini's. She gave him to me because she truly believe he would not live if someone not committed to him took him. Every two hours for a couple weeks I fed him, kept honey water available in his kennel and even took him to church with me in my coat pocket or other places if I were to be gone more than 2 hours at a time. I got him at nearly 10 weeks old and he weighed 15 ounces. He is a thriving, happy, healthy boy whose 1st birthday is next month.

I am trying to decide when to let their coats start growing out for a thicker winter insulation. We heat with wood so my house goes through night time chills. I keep a heating pad under their dogs beds for added warmth but I can't in good conscious shave them down in late fall and winter. I keep them with a thicker poofy puppy cut to insure they stay warm. One women I met last winter had all of poodles shaved to the barest point and those dogs where always shivering. I felt so sorry for them.

I love that apricot color! Zoey's sister's were apricot, but we ended up falling in love with her instead. She's phantom, but you can barely tell it when she's trimmed tight (which she needs to be today if I get a chance).

Here are pics of our Zoey Beth months ago right after a cut. She barely settles down enough for me to take pictures these days. *sigh*

And checking out the new pup (mini long haired dachshund, they adore each other now, but this was the first day and she still wasn't sure! heh)

Awww Ninja you have some great photos!

The following link is to our shutterfly albums site - many of our rescues and our current pack of shepherds etc. are there.

I should move some of them over to photobucket but I'm lazy.

I still have about 50 pics to upload of the last five years' worth of rescues and transports and fosters but that's some of them.

First off I would really like to say what beautiful babies to all of you. Next I will say that I have a special place in my heart for blue and black as I raised blue and black danes for years.

Next after reading MP post on the ear problems she had with her baby I thought I would share my homemade ear cleaner recipe for dogs. This will clear up an infection if used daily till smell is gone and is a lot cheaper than a vet bill.

Dog ear Cleaner
1 bottle rubbing alcohol
4 TBlS boric acid powder (can be ordered at walmart pharmacy)
16 drops gentian violet (also a pharmacy)

Pour out a little of the alcohol and add rest of ingr
Shake well before each use (boric powder will settle in bottom so make sure you shake well) clean ears with a soft cotton (I use make up pads found at the $ store)

Good luck hope the recipe helps someone. I usally have to make about 10 bottles at a time as all my family use it and they call for me to mix it up.

edited to add, that you can use this to keep the ears clean not just when you have a problem.

I have a question for you poodle owners. Someone gave me a standard and hes 8 month old. I don't think he was socialized as a pup because he growls at everyone especially my dh. He is fine with me and my toddler and never attempts to growl or anything. He has not left my side since I got him and is very smart. Does anyone know how to get him to stop growling at people especially my DH. I hate to have to get rid of him for this- he is so good other than the growling. PLEASE HELP!!

Without knowing his back ground it is hard to say. I would check with the local dog club on if they can help or if they know of someone who will help you. Also sometime if you get ahold of animal control they might know of someone who will help. Good luck hope ya don't give up on him sounds like he is protecting you to me.

Hi, thanks for taking him in. Growling at the age is usually fear based and is probably the result of poor socialization or poor parentage. Both can be improved with access to classes and a trainer's help.

Instead of you feeding the dog, husband needs to feed him and offer all the best treats - for a trick or a behavior. If you walk him normally, husband should instead. Don't coddle him when he growls, don't scold him. WALK AWAY. If you can make it a non-issue do it. Reward him at the distances at which he is calm. Have him sit when he's bothered, change his focus to YOU, reward the sit. Change directions or don't approach people for awhile. Let him figure out that's he's not going to be overwhelmed. Work on his looking at YOUR face or husbands on command. We use "watch me", it's quickly started by having a dog sniff a treat and then you lift it to just above your eyes.

As soon as the dog meets your eyes. Good, dog, good watch me - dog gets treat. Work up in the house, in the yard, work toward duration. Ideally at least 30 seconds. We start with treats, we usually build duration with TOYS.

The idea is to take the focus off outsiders and put it on you. Take the responsibility and worry away from the dog. Give him something else to think about.

And in the home, if your husband steps up and works with the dog and feeds it, things will probably balance out.

If he PERSISTS do not hesitate to contact a rescue or trainer for a REAL evaluation. Don't assume he won't bite, you don't know what his background is.

I live way over near Knoxville or I'd volunteer to look at him for you. If something comes up and you feel you have to place him, let me know. I can help you get that done. Don't place him in a shelter, I can see he gets into rescue.

Hugs.

NP What beautiful dogs you have!! Poodles are so different from other dog breeds... So smart and almost human-like

I used to poodle-sit my neighbors pair of black and white standards ( one of each color) when I was a kid, and they were such sweet, happy dogs. Cant wait to see pics of the puppies!!

MP Your mini pups are adorable, and I love the apricot!! A blue would be the perfect addition
