The Old Folks Home

That’s part of why I joined here, figured I already talk to most of you elsewhere anyway!! I’ve been bad about keeping up lately but I try.

As for farm animals, I currently only have chickens but I’d love to have rabbits and goats eventually. Thinking of getting quail next though. Eventually I’ll probably have everything under the sun. :lau

Really want horses too and ducks or turkeys.

And lots of dogs. Currently have none. Do have a cat though. And 4 goldfish.

I need a farm though.

Do have a large garden this year though at least so a step in the right direction haha

I’m definitely waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy on the other side of that :lau
Ok Noah, get busy building that ark!

@ronott1, if you want to get back to the country, take some well meaning advice. Do it before you get too old to handle the transition. We were in our 50s when we bought our farm ten years ago. Barely under the wire so to speak. It would have been much easier were we younger. We chose Missouri with the thought of commuting until DH was ready to retire and did that for almost 4 years. It was tough going but the end result was worth the hassle.

@J99 my pleasure. I love it when somebody calls me 'young lady' even though that boat sailed long ago. I'm 66. Sometimes I feel younger, physically, sometimes much older but always mentally I am 35 with 31 years of experience!;)

Thanks for the tip!

I do worry about the upkeep and setup of a new place

If you can buy a place with acreage that is up and running you would be in good shape. Or a place that is 'almost' what you want but you need a barn and fencing which would put it in the category of 'a work in progress'. Our 29.5 acres was what we were looking for but the house needed a lot of renovating. We still aren't done and it's getting harder for us to do now that we are nearing 70.

What we did was farm out the larger jobs. Fields needed clearing. Hired a brush remover to come in and clear about 6 acres for us at a cost of somewhere around 1500 dollars. We had the same company clear trees back from around the house at around the same price. It was money well spent.

Family and friends that will pitch in will help a lot also. Promise them a cook out if they come help you do whatever joy you need help with. It's doable believe me.

My dream has always been to live on a farm but I struggled most my life and didn’t make great choices growing up so I never got to get anything good. You hear about being born with a silver spoon in your mouth? Well I was born with beans and corn bread in mine lol or fried bread lol but I live now where I can finally enjoy pieces of that anyway and having chickens for the first time is part of that

These are very good tips!
I do not think I would get over 5 acres. That seems like a size that can be more easily taken care of

J99, I was raised country for the most part. Lived rural until 1983 then became a miserable city dweller until I met my future husband in 2005. He lived rural and his business was in a town that had only 3000 people in comparison to the one I abandoned which had 37,000. Somebody asked me once why I moved to the small town and I said, the right man and true love. Reasons enough.

Our 'retirement town' in MO has 1300 people. It's a different world than the one we left behind in IL. It takes time and you are still young enough to make it happen for yourself. All it takes is elbow grease and determination...not to mention that all pesky money. Properties go to auction around here quite often and sell for more than a reasonable price. Where there is a will there will be a way.
