The Old Folks Home

Kdogg thank you for proving you don't have to be old to post here. You would be surprised at the folks that won't post here. Even though some will be old enough for senior discount next month. Plus the fact that folks they communicate with regularly on other threads are here also. Just mishuganah - that's all.:lau

Yeah, that it is. They don't call it cow flop without a reason. BUT that stuff is black gold when it comes to fertilizer.

The neighbors have Dextors and love them. They are half the size of a regular cow and can give two gallons of milk per day. Also great for meat. If I was getting any cows it would be Dextors.

Unfortunately I've seen too many truly catastrophic injuries caused by regular sized steers to keep them around. They can be just plain dangerous. I've always fancied a nice gentle Jersey or Holstein cow but then I remember the friend who came into the office with his orbital bones shattered on one side from getting clipped in the face with a hoof from a cow in agony from a dead calf being stuck in her and snap back to reality.

@ronott1 I agree with @bruceha2000. Y'all need a hobby farm! Retire, ditch the rat race of southern California. Move to the quieter north end of the state, stake yourself out 20 acres and raise your own food, breathe in fresh air, work hard, go to bed tired and wake up with sore muscles and a smile on your face when you think about all you have accomplished on your property.

Trust me. You want to do it sooner than later. DH and I had 3 years before we started having health problems that reminded us that we should have retired sooner.

@J99 Yeah, age. Are you a senior, soon to be senior or a someday will be a senior? I'd hate to saw you in half and count your rings...no wait, that's a tree that you do that to...:lau

@penny1960, how ya feeling? Did you go to the doctors/urgent care/ER?:hugs
Yeah, I am ok with no cows. Wanting small goats so they are easy to handle.
How are you feeling Micro?

Cap, I too was thinking along the lines of what mirco said, about the plops being pure fertilizer gold. He goes to a horse farm, and brings home a trailer load of horse manure, then puts it in the garden. I like the idea of the Dexter cows.
We got a dump truck full of composted horse manure, I have barely made a dent in it. And I have compost piles for my chicken poo. The rabbit manure is best if you ask me, no aging needed. Just like goat poo.

I’m soon to be a senior 51
Lol don’t saw me in half
I want a milking cow but no one in my family would probably even drink it but I wish we could go back to old days
I love antiques , quality is so much better than the junk they make these days. Maybe you could get milk goats. The milk from them is wonderful!

Not too bad. I'm having a Osteoarthritis flare in my left knee that has me sitting with an ice bag on the bleepin thing. Just told DH that if it didn't settle down FAST I was going to gnaw it off and be done with it. I see my regular doc next Tuesday. If it hasn't settled down by then I'll have him take a look at it.

Otherwise feeling pretty good. I've come to grips with the fact that the Osteoarthritis/spine damage is not going to go away, so I may as well learn to live with it. Still doing my exercises twice a day. I'm determined to stick with it.

I had to make a correction on my original post. The friend who had a run in with the distressed cow was a veterinarian who came into our office with half of his face swollen, black and blue...more black really....and his eye swollen shut. The cow had reared up as he approached it and hit him in the face with a hoof. The poor cow was suffering horribly from a dead calf that was stuck in it and not to be held responsible for its actions. Poor thing had to be put down and the poor vet had two surgeries to repair the orbit of his eye as his eyeball was in danger of falling down into his cheek. He had almost lost the vision in his eye and had severe double vision for over a month. Luckily, he healed but I'll never forget how bad he looked when he came in after the first surgery to have his vision checked. I felt so sorry for him. Needless to say it made me determined not to be around cows.

Another man we knew was trampled by what was a 'gentle' bull when the bull saw another bull and went on the defensive/offensive with it. Broke every rib in the mans body and he was in his late 70s at the time.

Cows can be sweet natured but basically they like most large animals, whether it be a bovine or horse, can be unpredictable no matter how gentle they are.

@J99. 51? You are a kid but very welcome to join us oldsters here. Personally I love it when the younger set joins in. Keeps me on my toes and thinking young!

I believe age. We've got everything here on the rocking chairs from 20's to 70's.

We are on par with our artistic talents!
Yes Cap, very nice artwork.

Time to retire to a hobby farm! Bet you can't wait.
That is so very true!
(Yesterday was the first day of Fall Quarter at UC Davis....Tomorrow is the first day in instruction!)
