The Old Folks Home

trumpeting, that is a beautiful picture. I used to love going to see my parents in KY in the fall, when all the trees would change colors. That doesn't happen in this part of Florida.

It’s so rare that a camera captures how amazing it looks. I’ve taken so many pictures that look “nice” but don’t convey the spectacular trees-on-fire look of a sugar maple at once colored bright yellow, brighter orange, and red edges. When the leaves are wet, or especially when the sun shines through - words can’t convey the astonishing beauty.

The tree in the photo is a red maple. (Duh.)

I love it here!

Very true. The Santa Ana winds blow in southern California, not up where they are cutting power. I believe the areas where they are cutting power are also mountainous to some extent, certainly Paradise was. Not so easy to run a flail along the power lines there.

It’s my understanding that a major part of the problem is people building houses in extremely fire prone areas. Also, the Western states struggle to have enough water, and people are still putting in lawns that require lots of water. The rivers are running extremely low, and the aquifers are depleted. I think there’s a lot more to it than maintaining the power lines. Seems they might need more regulation to keep folks from building out there, and to stop them from wasting water.

@ronott1 the story about the farmer hitting a rock is chilling. Seems they are almost unpreventable!

Now that I’ve been eating vegetables again too, I have way more energy.

I just read a study of depressed
College students. They put them in a Mediterranean diet (lots of fruits and vegetables, fish, poultry, less meat, snack on nuts) with added cinnamon and turmeric. In 3 weeks they were markedly less depressed!

The “pizza-as-usual” crowd remained depressed. They didn’t call it that, but you know. Pizza, burgers, junk.

So it’s not strange you have more energy!

They will get the job done if they are willing to do hard work!
Aye, there's the rub!

They also allow duck but at 25 dollars a pop......I'll stick to chicken breasts and thighs.
So raise your own ducks!

HFC syrup
:sick
And iff you add imitation maple flavor and call it "breakfast syrup" :sick:sick:sick:sick:sick:sick

SHHHHHH! They'll all want to move here!

Yes to the first for sure. Then they complain about the wildlife in their yards and want someone to protect them from the inevitable fires.

On the second part, a lot of Californians replaced grass with local plants (which means near desert in a lot of the state), rocks and fake grass a drought or two back. Don't know about other arid western states.

My recipe does not have corn syrup in it and the karo I use is not HFC
My from scratch has Karo in it also. We use HFCS free Log Cabin syrup. The only thing I touch with HFCS in it is my chocolate syrup I indulge in on my half cup of low fat ice cream once or twice a week. I don't even eat packaged cookies.

Here too, Bruce. We have friends back in IL who run their own business. They set up and maintain grain driers. They pay well. Treat their employees well. New hires come in when they can get them and don't care if they show up to work or once there work at all. But they all show up for the pay check on pay day.

So raise your own ducks!

Sure I can see that happening. Took me 5 years to eat my first chicken. Ducks are much cuter than chickens (don't tell my flock I said that!) No way I could kill and eat one. ....I could hit one of the Amish neighbors that raises ducks and maybe buy a butchered one from them.

Pure maple syrup here is pricey. I'll stick with the Log Cabin that is HFC free.

That makes sense!!

I’ve read a bit about how diet can have a huge impact on mood but I don’t think I’ve read that specific one.

There’s been a lot of studies recently though on the microbiome/brain connection and how gut health can have a huge impact on mental health, mood, etc.

But not even just mental health, it affects sooo much and can cause or cure so many other things too and they’re only just now starting to study it!

But some doctors, MH people, etc. are already taking the approach of changing diet first before trying other stuff.

They say exercise can have a huge impact too.

But of course it’s a bit of a catch 22 since when you’re depressed, it can be hard to eat right and exercise. But they say if you can force yourself it helps haha

Anyway, I’m not surprised that eating better would make them feel that way. I think it’s not even just the vegetables or processed junk, even just eating a ton of carbs usually bogs me down too. So makes sense something lighter like fish or chicken and vegetables would help.

I know for me personally I find when I eat junky or sit around too much then I feel pretty carpy too both physically in terms of like migraines, etc. and mentally.

And it also seems to make my anxiety worse too for whatever reason. And of course the depression which really isn’t bad when I actually get up and do stuff and eat right haha still slightly there though but that’s probably because I never last on the healthy eating thing long. :hide

I wonder if I should try that 3 week thing haha

I love Log Cabin. :lau

The fires happen in places with trees and etc.

The above sounds like blame the victim stuff. PGE is a convicted felon and they do not maintain their infrastructure and have been the cause of the biggest fires that killed a lot of people.

Most of the places that removed their lawns replaced them with rocks during the drought.

If you read otherwise, it was likely from russian trolls. They are very active and are making up some very odd things
