The Old Folks Home

I love chicken TV!

Me too!! They are so entertaining!! I gave them a bunch of rotten wood and leaf litter and they loved going after all the bugs and everything in it! Still digging through it all this morning. :lau

We have loads of those, mostly pine.

Yeah most of ours are pine but I think a couple might be oak. We have a ton of pine trees though.

Goodnight, and stay safe!

Thank you!! Thankfully nothing else fell during the night.

I am against these low carb diets. I know far too many people that lost weight good on them, but after they lost the weight, and went to more of a normal diet, they gained it all back. In addition, as was previously mentioned, the higher fat content in the diet is not healthy for everyone. I have always maintained that Weight Watchers is one of the best overall diets available. They teach you how to eat eat, for a lifetime. Between that, and using many of the recipes in the American Diabetes Assoc. cookbook, controlling weight is not as difficult as most people make it. It's the way we eat that makes it more difficult. Dd, and I recently discussed this. I'm getting ready to change some things around in my diet.

Of course they gained going back to the foods that made them fat. Dr Atkins plan did teach people how to eat for a life time IF they followed the plan. I know two people that have lost 200 pounds and kept it off. Even the UK, and Diabetes Assoc have adopted keto.

Why is fat not healthy?? IT is natural. At least butter, grassfed beef fat, lard and such. While some people have issues with AA, not everyone does. Just like not everyone has problems with peanuts. If you mean the grain oils like corn oil and safflower oils, yes, those are a real problem.

THere is a scientist that studies insulin and has many long distance runners that come to him. TO run a hundred miles, or run for 24 hours, or run a 24 mile marathon, having lots of fat in the diet is a must. THere is more and more evidence that carb loading and a 24 mile marathon is a deadly combination. THe greatest example of people that depended on fat like no other group is the Inuit. It works.

For me my cholesterol numbers are great, and my BP is good, too. If you are interested in the details, Ivor Cummins has an interesting story about how 3 doctors could not explain his test results... he had to go to the literature to read it for himself. He was able to fix his health issues without the useless doctors and shares his findings at conferences around the world. You can find him on youtube.

I read an article that said going on low carb diets is especially bad on those over 50?(might have been 40).

I agree that an eating plan that is sustainable like weight watchers is best.

Most who write about diet actually dont know what they are talking about unfortunately.

Weight Watchers has changed. It has gone keto.

If anything, older folks need more protein.

I know Brendan in NZ who lost 200 lbs and has kept it off living the keto life, who was invited to talk to the Secretary of ______, I forget now, of NZ to discuss keto. He hand him a ten page dissertation on keto. It is a growing, actually exploding, weight loss option.

CHeck out Dr BIkman, Dr Jason FUng, Dr William Davis, Dr noakes, Ivor Cummins, Tina N. and the list goes on.....
DietDOctors.com is one of the best websites; A group of doctors banned together to fight city hall.

( I mostly live on a food and nutrition and dieting forum, looking at the latest research, best health practices, which tests to get and why, what food is causing health problems, how the medical profession is behind the times, and the pharmaceutical impact on government agencies and doctoring, how to buy the cleanest foods..... all because I got a chicken some 8 years ago, lol)

Have a daughter that was suffering badly with joint pain. Doc suggested low carb diet. She is feeling Soo much better. Lost weight too. Seeing her success, I have been doing low carb since a year ago last August. Still needing shots in my shoulder, now knee, and my lower back is hurting now. :idunno. Weight loss..big plus.

Start looking at each of the foods you are eating. On the LC forum we joke that once we start an elimination diet, first step is dump grains and sugar, you start finding other foods that are troublesome. Can be night shade family; can be dairy; can be one kind of dairy but not another; can be an arachadonic acid sensitivity. Can be red wine, a sugar, an ingredient in a seasoning.....

When I was on a school committee looking at how to curb the endless cupcakes marching into the grammar school, we went around the table each listing a food that causes frank allergies. THe list was endless. That list ddi not account for the kind of reactions Im refering too, the ones that just cause aches and pains, or GI upset.

For me, sometimes too much tomato sauce will trigger hand pain; but otherwise eating fresh from the garden doesnt cause the swelling and the pain.

From what I can tell nearly all of the stuff on diet and exercise is driven by someone wanting to make money. Quite a lot of charlatans out there.

Eating a healthy diet from all food groups is best for health.

I think the word keto is over used and often silly thing to say-- a buzz word used to make someone money. Going into ketosis is not a good thing for your kidneys so I would bet most of the so called keto diets do not put someone into the dangerous state of ketosis.

We need to eat the right carbs to live. Complex grain carbs. Most people can be much healthier by cutting white sugar and sugar free foods. Cutting processed baked goods and eating home baked goods too. Processed baked foods have very nasty chemicals in them that I do not add to my baked foods.

I have posted before that the key thing is to eat a diet that is sustainable. The Atkins diet was more sustainable but still not as good as eating lower calories of a diet that does not cut out an entire food group.

The keto diet is great if you don't have food allergies. Unfortunately, I do. I cannot eat tree nuts in any form or I wind up with horrible stomach discomfort, pain, nausea, cramping in my intestines, head ache and finally diarrhea. A colleague once sent DH a 5 pound bag of pistachio nuts as a Christmas gift. We both love them so we tucked into the bag that night while watching TV. He was still munching when the stomach ache and nausea hit me. It lasted for a full two days before it worked its way through my system. When I did some 'googling' of my symptoms the first thing that came up was 'tree nut allergy' It makes sense. I've had trouble eating anything with nuts in it my entire life, now I know why.

But it kills a lot of diets for me because of it. Then there is the gout diet I try to follow. Plus, now I'm having trouble with the suculose that they are using as an artificial sweetener in a lot of products. Same reaction as tree nuts produces.

I keep sugar intake at a minimum, use honey, saccharin and Stevia as sweeteners, eat a lot of poultry and fresh water fish, veggies and my main treat is a serving of low fat ice milk.

I discovered that you do what you have to do in order to feel good as far as diet is concerned and that you are better off if you avoid processed foods like they were poison.

Doesn't the Keto diet promote that as well?

Thank you Ron. What you have said is true. The more variety in a diet, the healthier it is. People eat far too many processed foods today. While they're convenient, they're fairly void of nutritional value, and full of additives, and preservatives.

Also around here our cable/internet/phone company sucks! The TV is constantly going out lately and/or the internet barely works and it’s expensive as all get out! And you gotta jump through a million hoops on the phone trying to fix stuff. :barnie

Horrible customer service.

But they can get away with it cause they’re the main company here or even the only one in some areas. Although I think in our area we can get another company but it’s a pain to switch. We have everything on this one, are used to it, and mom has an email account with them (though no one else does) so we haven’t yet. And also most people are with this one. So they get away with it!

It’s ridiculous.
Our two year agreemen with FIos is coming up-- the service has been reliable, with about 4 times we lost it.... and it costs electricity to run the boxes in addition to the Tv.... we are in the process of deciding to dump it and jut keep the internet portion.

Buying an occassional DVD was farr less expensive. Just goota figure out how to run Netflicks separately... maybe it does and I just realize it? We used to use a hotspot but that device died. If any one has thoughts on this.... chime in.
