The Old Folks Home

A number of years ago, I had some free-ranging birds, and some of the hens decided that a corner of a horse's stall was a good place to lay their eggs. I was like, "well, OK, it's not in a line of sight from the door so the crows won't find it easily; I guess it'll do." So, I'd cruise by there a few times per day to pick up any eggs. At one point, I stopped getting eggs from that site, and they weren't turning up anywhere else, either. The birds weren't molting, a snake wouldn't be coming around that often, I wasn't seeing crow activity. I hadn't seen signs of egg on the birds, so if I had egg-eaters in the flock, they were being awfully neat about it. The birds must be laying; what was happening to the eggs?

I finally found out when I was cleaning the stall next door, and by some miracle, there were a couple of eggs in the nest. I intentionally left them there, thinking they might help me catch the culprit. A horse wandered into the stall with the nest, and I started hearing crunching sounds. A horse was eating the eggs! I guess she might have broken one by accident, and found out they taste good. But thanks to her, the horses lost that stall as a lounging area - I kept that stall door closed as long as the hens kept using it.

My favorite is repeating that “the 3’ x 4’ coop you bought from TSC won’t house 12 chickens, despite what it says on the label.”
Yeah, burned out on that one too. I don't know how the people who make and sell little coops like that can sleep at night. How many are sold to new chicken people who then figure out that they have been duped.

I'll wave in your general direction on my way to and from Northampton Thursday.

I have revised my thinking, at least for awhile, about the pig coming up. Dh checked behind the chicken coop. It's digging back there, and making a mess. I have a pen skirt, and asked if it was holding up. It's not digging close to the coop, so the pen skirt has not been affected. A light bulb went on in my head. I actually do get good ideas at times. Hmmmmm, I've been wanting that front fence, and a gate put back up for awhile now. We are fenced on 3 sides. The existing fencing was old, and badly deteriorated, as was the gate. Dh took it down, and put in new fence posts, but liked the clean look, without the fence, and gate.

I had mentioned the couple of stray dogs, (which were friendly) and the 2 times the coyote came into the yard, but that was not enough to motivate him. With the pig coming into the yard, and digging it up, I've since renewed my plea for a fence, and gate. In addition, his garden is just taking off, and he knows that pig is going to be all into it, when it begins producing. Can't have that. He's much more agreeable about putting up the fence, and gate now. YAY!

Nobody says I can't pen that booger up AFTER I get my fence......

Forgive me. I posted this on another thread (about too much oyster shell, where we were joking about our girls being “prodigies”) and I enjoyed writing it so much I’m sharing it here. I’m sure I’m breaking all the rules. Don’t tell!

My prodigies specialize in finding creative places to lay eggs. After I got only one egg in 3 weeks, I investigated the darkest, most difficult-to-reach corner of the run, behind and under the ramp. 16 eggs! I blocked that spot
And a subsequent one.

Recently I’ve been keeping them inside for longer and longer because egg production was low. We’ve noticed one of my Buff Orps often went off by herself into the woods behind the garage. Today she came out of the woods and started singing her egg song. That’s when I knew for sure.

I said to DH, “I’ll bet there are a dozen.” Nailed it. 12 even. Scrambled egg treats tonight, plenty of eggs left. 4 looked clean enough to salvage, and they didn’t float.
Your Girl's like to organize Easter egg hunts for you!

That's a hoot, Angel.

I set my girls' oyster shell bowl in a nesting box that they don't use (you know how it goes. I built them a beautiful three stalled wooden nest box and they want to lay in a kitty litter bucket) where it wouldn't get knocked over and spilled like they usually do.

I mix layer crumbles with game bird finisher and all flock pellets so the young cockerels don't fry their kidneys but the hen's egg shells were getting a bit brittle so I started putting out the oyster shell for them again.

Tonight I got one egg.....somebody laid it in the oyster shell bowl. I mean come on, you goofy hen. I have 12 kitty litter boxes freshly cleaned and stuffed with pine chip and straw and you laid your egg in the oyster shell bowl? What? Did you feel the urge to lay an egg, stop off for a bite or two of calcium to get things rolling and suddenly went...oh CARP! I'm not going to make it up two feet to the nest boxes?

Sometimes they really amaze me....and not in a good way.
I got one egg yesterday too! I have 6 hens and it is November so I am happy to get even one this time of year

Micro I know I could never make it two feet up to nest boxes :gig:lau maybe you should cut the girls some slack. BTW honestly I will get the package out, one way or another.

I can just hear the hens saying - what a pig sty her nest box is, full of empty ice cream cartons and NOT one egg.
