The Old Folks Home

I actually have some bird related ones from this morning. My silly turkeys and one hen love to roost on top of the fence for the pen. The scene just caught my eye. Nothing spectacular since I was too cold to set up the tripod and do it "right'

Things probably have changed since I raised and showed dogs  but at that time Irish Setters (large breed) routinely lived to 16 or 17.   Mid size  Irish Terriers were also long lived.  All large breeds  do not die  young( 7 or 8).  The big breeds raised  with prudent feeding ,so they aren't pushed to develop size and weight before their bone structure can manage it ,tend to live years longer and some escape the  worst  effects  for hip dysplasia.

My friend has had  several Labs live to mid teens.  I won't mention the ages on her cats because they have 9 lives to start with, which just isn't fair.

By large I meant really large like the Great Danes, Mastiffs etc. Most of them seem to live less than 10 years. I have a Lab now that is in his teens. I got a Lab because the Great Danes have such short lives.

I would think that after Loring Air Force Base closed that area really is the middle of nowhere! I have fond memories of my time there. The County as the locals called it is/was astounding, the Moose had to be seen up close to be believed.

I have heard a lot of stories about Loring. I was at Turner AFB in Albany Georgia from 1965 until it closed in 1967.

Count me as another that doesn't mind - that goes for all the people here. This is a people thread, not necessarily a chicken thread.

All our bases have closed - even Brunswick NAS. I got married up in The County and have a love for its remoteness from the rest of the world. There is, unfortunately, now a WalMart in Houlton but otherwise it is fairly devoid of big box stores.

I guess Dow has closed too. I have a picture made in1966 of Arnold White from Dow and me sitting on the external tank of a B-52D on Guam.

Greetings from the far side of the Pacific!

We have been crazy busy here. The kids loved Christmas. The major scores seem to be the blue truck, a baby doll with a bottle and a play tent with tunnels.

We took a pause from fence and coop construction to repaint the security grills and replace some electrical outlets.

Back to construction tomorrow. I hope to make a big dent on 6 new breeder coops. Before we start I need to see if I can repair the 5000 watt 110 converter that stopped working when I turned the mains back on. Its probably just a fuse but I will need it for my 110v tools.

Once underway we will vaccinate pigs and then chickens for NCD.

I am pulling out the camera tomorrow so hopefully I can take a few decent pics.

Beautiful photos DiDi, I'm so glad you are having fun. I agree with who ever said, you have an eye. It's like you can just see it, frozen in place, before it's snapped into that camera.
lol..have to ask, which hen roosts with the turkeys? Those are cool pictures.

Bless your heart. God be with you. Wishing you a wonderful new year. I know how hard it is to lose a mother. Not easy.
Thank you Cynthia I hope you have a wonderful new year too.

X2 so hard at first... But it does get easier over time. Happy New Year Everyone and God bless!
I am holding out for that easier over time, it can kick in any moment if it would like! Happy New year to you too.

I love all the pics, no matter the subject. DiDi, your pics are artistic and aesthetically pleasing. Oz, your pics are heart warming and carry me away to visit you and your lovely family in my imagination. Thank you both and all the rest of you that take the time to share little morsels of your lives with us here in "The Home." They are delicious!
