The Old Folks Home

micro, Sorry about your cousin. I can understand your frustration about the phone message system too. You're going to have to train yourself to go through them, and clear out the old ones on a weekly basis.

The kids got a bit rambunctious last night, so I told them to go outside to each of the security cameras, and dance/shake their bootys in front of each of the cameras. That means they would have to go around the entire place, and the extra movement in front of each camera would burn off the excess energy. Understand, my yard is pretty well lit, and with the Christmas lights up, there was no visibility problem. Off they went, then all of a sudden, they came running back in screaming, and the middle child was crying, and afraid. A noise spooked them. They were in fear for their lives. Their mom, and I had been sitting on the patio watching them, and we knew what spooked them. When they went under the big Oak tree, they roused the birds that live in it.

I can't let the kids be afraid like that, so I told my daughter to get a broom, and give it to the middle child. Of course, the oldest had to get his nerf gun, and gave one to his baby sister too. Off we went. All of us. When we got to the tree, the birds were not happy, and fluttered their wings. When grandma, and mom kept walking, they walked with us. We told them to listen carefully. Now they know what the fluttering of wings at night, sounds like. I used to do this with my kids, when they were growing up. They learned the different sounds the local wildlife made both in the daytime, and at night, and were unafraid, except for alligators, and bobcats. They knew to quietly, and steadily withdraw from the area when they heard those 2 sounds.
Sounds like a fun night.

When the boys were little I would at times need a time out....

So I would sit down in the livingroom room with my feet up, workiibg on regaining some inner calm, and watch the kids as they lapped the house.

Usually they had to run around the house 10 times... then they could come back in.

Oh... when the weather was way too nasty and I couldn't stand the thought of getting them dressed for the cold, I would have them do races. We have a stretch of our house that works as a wide long hallway, so all 5 kids could line up side by side... then they had to race to the other side as.... whatever animal I picked. I usually picked something difficult and slow... so earthworm, crab, fish out of water, slug, millipede, etc. Repeat that 10 times and they would get well tired out.

We also did exercise things.... how many push ups, sit ups etc.

And yeah, it was also a good teaching moment to work on being kind, because of course the bigger ones could do more than smaller ones.

@getaclue in the end it wouldn't make a difference. Even with US cellular, voicemails wouldn't appear until months after the fact. We could check weekly and they wouldn't be there. Then suddenly appear. I still probably wouldn't have gotten the news until two or more months after whatever happened was over and done with even if I'd checked it every day. DH had even immediately said that he had just checked the voice mail recently and there was nothing there. Then suddenly, 18+ voicemails suddenly appear.

6 years ago back in IL, I had a friend show up at the house at 10pm one night asking me to check my phone. I had talked to her earlier in the day, hung up, but my phone had called her phone over 500 times....on it's own. We had to turn it off to get it to quit. Took the phone into US cellular, they sent it in for repair and sent me a new phone as an upgrade. Mine was a defect in that particular phone that was unrepairable.

It's all water under the bridge at this point in time. But at this point, we are ready to get rid of the phone and get a land line. Never had this problem with a land line and answering machine.

I have that problem with TracFone. No service at home so the phones aren't even on. Seems like once you turn it on where there is service you get the missed texts and voicemails ... except when you don't. Like you I've gotten voicemails months after they were left. And the only way to know ABOUT when they were left is with context from that message or the ones before and after since it only tells you the day of the week and time.

Yep, pretty much sounds like our problem, Bruce. Maybe what is happening is we aren't getting enough bandwidth where we live in order to download the messages. Only our phone isn't even showing missed calls on a regular basis.

DH is fuming and ready to cancel the service. Meanwhile, I emailed my brother and told him fergawdsake DO NOT call me if there is an emergency. Have somebody email me.

I have a landline for 50 years and I love it. Of course the bills have gone up and up and up. I hardly ever use it - I'm not eager to spend much time on the phone. Just when I have to get a seat on the bus, or make Dr.appts. etc.
Last year my son gave me a cell phone. I hate it incredibly much. Only my brother & son call me on it, I don't use it at all. I had my son put some of my favorite songs on it and that's about the only time I want to use it. He even got the ring tone set up for me Aha, doing "Take On Me."

I hear ya, DD. I don't like talking on the phone either. I spent so much of my professional career talking to people on the phone that it burned me out completely. Now people are so dependent on their cell phones not only for communication but for internet also. I can use ours to read emails but my fingers are so clumsy anymore that touch typing on one is getting harder every day.

I just spent some time on line looking up the problem with our phone and it seems as though this is an ongoing problem with Verizon that they don't know how to fix.

DH is determined to go back to a land line when our contract is up. We carry our hand held ham radios with us when we travel and help is only a push of a button away with them if the need arises. Plus if you want to talk to somebody, folks are around to do that also. HAMs love to talk even if they don't know who they are talking to. It's like...'where are you? Whow, never talked to anybody there before!'
