The Old Folks Home

Oh, heck I'll just go ahead and post it in case any one wants to give it a try:

2 cups warm water
2/3 cup sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast

1) In large bowl dissolve the sugar in the warm water. Sprinkle yeast on top of water. Allow to proof until yeast resembles creamy foam

1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cups of vegetable oil
6 cups bread flour

2)mix salt and oil into the yeast. Mix the flour one cup at a time. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Place in a well oiled bowl and turn dough to coat. Cover with a damp cloth and allow to rise until doubled in bulk (about 1 hour but I usually set mine by our stove so it rises faster. Not by the stove it's about 1 1/2 hours for it to double)

I usually knead the dough until it gets that slightly sticky, glossy look to it. They say 6 cups but from experience I generally add 4 cups together, then start adding flour a half a cup at a time until I can get it out of the bowl to knead. I've seldom used all 6 cups and the bread turns out fluffy and moist.

3) Punch dough down. Knead for a few minutes and divide in half. Shape into loaves and place into two well oiled 9x5 loaf pans. Allow to rise for 30 minutes or until dough has risen 1 inch above pans.

I like it to have a bit more 'height' to it so I let mine rise until it just starts to ooze over the edges a bit then pop it in the oven. It will rise a bit more in the preheated oven before it starts to bake.

4) Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

we don't like a real crunchy crust so I bake my bread for 28 minutes. The crust is still brown and crisp and the crust is firm but not hard.

This is by far our favorite bread. Not only do we use it for sandwiches but it has become a staple for morning toast and French toast.
That is almost exactly the same as our old family recipe. The only difference is, the salt isn't added until two cups of flour have been added, only because salt sometime lessens the effect of the yeast. I can vouch for this recipe! It's super good!
Awwwwwww you guys are making me blush..

Thank you.

Speaking of going south. I just had a filling fall out of a tooth. Gosh blessed thing is on the inside of a bottom incisor. Since I'm on the prolia what I can have done is limited to fillings, crowns and cleanings.....and naturally I can see what looks like a cavity at the bottom so I'm probably s******. Sigh. Means calling the doctor on Monday, they calling a dentist. we have a dentist here but are looking for a new one. The one we go to is exorbitant with their prices and impersonal to boot. It's like, if you are going to rob me blind at least smile and make small talk with me while you do it.

So until Monday I'm sitting here and naturally my tongue keeps finding that danged gaping hole in my tooth which is now hurting.

I hate teeth!
I wish you were here. I have the best dentist, finally!!! Have had my share of dental problems and bad dentists.
Good grief Ron I have said forever I would not go back to the life I had
before dentures you both reaffirm that for me :hugs
It's dental implants for me! I didn't go the route of replacing everything, just the ones I needed to. I love them! Took a long time though. And a boatload of dough!

I swear I have about 15,000 dollars invested in my teeth right now thanks to having a congenital disease in the roots of my teeth. I'm just about done with doing any more with them that equals heroic measures. I won't do implants although many have recommended them to me. I have a low bone shelf on my bottom jaw and have been told I'd probably need bone implants before they could even consider dental implants although I really am a candidate for them. I mean come on guys, choose a side here. I keep feeling as though I'm just a guinea pig with a bottomless wallet in their eyes.

Right now I'm mourning the loss of our old dentist in IL. He and his wife were/are friends of ours. He died a year and a half ago and I just wrote his widow/my friend and told her I sure missed the good old days when I could call them up on the weekend, tell them I had a problem, they would tell us to meet them at their office in 30 minutes, we'd meet, they'd fix the problem or do a baling wire and chewing gum repair until Monday and in the meantime we'd make plans for going out to dinner that night and have a great time.

I hate breaking in a new doctor.

@ronott1, I seriously suspect that you are the only person around with teeth problems worse than my own.......:barnie

Thank you.

Bruce, I'd go for the buy if I were you. Of course you'd have a lot of explaining to do to Mrs. Bruce but the look on her face would be worth the effort.

@CapricornFarm, is that the beauty and the beast quilt? I have an article in Mother Earth News about how to make an herbal tea that you can flush your sinuses with that is antimicrobal and reduces swelling. I may try it if I get desperate enough. My sinuses always go south this time of the year.

That is just the panel for the center of the quilt, I am making 27 squares and a bunch of partial squares to go around it. I have 8 squares made.

I had 2 good dentists in TN. I hate that I can't go to them any more.

The biggest problem with my teeth is the four baby teeth, top and bottom just past the eye teeth!

That and the broken teeth at the top front.

I have a lot invested in my teeth too sadly

My mother never cared for dairy products and I guess way back they didn't know the importance of calcium during pregnancy. She had to have complete dentures at 40. Her first born, my sister had the worst teeth, all yellow, all twisted. She couldn't afford to have them worked on till she had a really good job many years later.

I was the middle kid and had very good teeth, till the punk next door knocked me down on ice and landed on top of me. Broke the bottom half of both permanent front teeth completely off. I was 8. Had a series of temporary crowns till I was about 17. Then got permanent ones. They kept breaking off. I had a very nice dentist (personality wise) but he was terrible as a dentist.

Finally found a great dentist and he did the two front crowns as one piece. He did this to stabilize them. One tooth was very loose and the other okay. So it worked well, for many, many years, Till the loose tooth got a root infection and had to be extracted.

Then jump to present dentist when the great one retired shortly after seeing me. Present guy made a 4 tooth bridge that cost nearly $2500 plus what insurance paid. He wanted to do 8 teeth in the bridge. Kept saying what a great deal it would be . I told him NO!!

I have a one tooth bridge for the top right baby tooth that was pulled. The front right tooth broke off last year and it was pinned and built up for a crown. It seems to be working well for now but time will tell how long it will last!
