The Old Folks Home

Sunday is horse day for me; cleaned the barn, brushed everybody and left giant piles of winter hair for the birdies, then I had a nice ride on one, did some work with the stallion (against his will!) but it went well and he ended up listening to me so I decided to start some liberty work with him and it went super well, I guess he likes that! And by the end my younger mare decided to join in and I played with two of them!
Finally turning a corner with them and the fun is starting to catch up to the work. I don’t think the fun will catch up to the money though lol.

:lau you’re hilarious!!

But also :love

I love horses!!

When I put up the simple 2 strand electric fence, and 1 surveillance camera on the back of my coop, it was because we suspected a raccoon prowling around back there. As we soon discovered, there were various forms of wildlife, and a lot of activity going on back there. It was working fairly well, but in our efforts to deter the activity, we were forced to put a third strand of wire on the fence. That seemed to do the trick, and things were going well.

Yesterday morning, I went out to feed the chickens. My electric fence was in total disarray. On the front corner rod, 2 of the resistors had been removed, creating enough slack that the wires on both sides were down, and touching each other on the ground. I looked, and one of the resistors was nearby. I didn't see the other resistor. I proceeded to take care of my chickens, then went to tend my fence.

I got a extra resistor to replace the one that I couldn't find. I went out, and put on the resistors, then put the wire back in place. I walked around the entire fence, to make sure it wasn't grounded out. When I did that, I discovered the other resistor, on the opposite side of the coop. My first impression was that a person had tried to get into the coop. Sometime during the process of taking off the resistors, they threw one, and it landed on the other side. No raccoon had done this. I got it all working again, then proceeded to check the surveillance footage.

I went through the footage twice, looking specifically at the rod where the resistors had been removed. Nothing. There was a wild rabbit, that was playing around for a bit, then stood up sniffing the air, and it took off. In the back of my mind, I asked why it ran off. What did it pick up on. It didn't get anywhere near the fence, but was it was not a suspect anyway. Still, nothing approached that corner. Dd #1 began watching the footage with me, thinking maybe I had missed something. Nothing. I knew that the one resistor, at the back of the coop, was visible on the footage. Instead of going through the entire thing again, I went to where the rabbit stood up, sniffed the air, and took off. No event was tagged after that. Instead of checking the tagged events, I watched everything from that moment on. Right after the rabbit took off, I could see where there was no resistor on the ground, then a couple minutes later, it was. Ok, I narrowed down the time frame. Now, to replay it, zooming in.

On the far corner of the back side, just before the resistor landed, there was movement. I didn't have that area well lit, so it wasn't as clear as where the resistor landed. I zoomed in, and replayed it. A huge paw reaches out, and pokes at the fence. Again, the paw hits the fence hard. All of a sudden, the animal hits the middle wire with it's paw, and bites the top wire, then the fight is on. Finally the animal takes off. It was a huge bobcat. When it attacked the fence, it was with such force, it caused the resistors to slide up off the rod, and the one was flung all the way over the top of the coop, landing on the opposite side.

Yesterday, we added another camera. I can see the entire coop area, really well now. No darker corners to lurk in. I hope the bobcat has learned not to mess with my electric fence, and stay away from my chickens. It did not return last night.
