In fact I've been thinking about stomping all of my swirly LED light bulbs and replacing them with the old timey ones! I am going to make a few extra trips to town in my Suburban too!

Have you seen that some are actually blaming this cold snap on global warming? The theory is that the cold wind that normally keeps the arctic air confined to more polar regions isn't as robust because the air is warmer, so wobbles, bumps and burps of cold air escaping are more likely. Dunno if I quite buy it . . . .

I am working on a list to order some new birds and turkey soon. I found a Hatchery in OK. has Frank Reese's turkey stock so I will be ordering some turkey from him. Then I want abt. 10 rir and 10 dark cornish. what do you all think of rir and dark cornish.
I was looking at info on alot of birds today trying to find large breeds over 8-9 lbs. for people that want to buy them to eat. They want large birds. As for the turkey I will be ordering bourbon reds and standard bronze. Then a few bbb or bbw at the co-op later on.
I would appreciate any input on the chickens breeds so I know what to think about or what to expect. Thanks

BF, on the other hand, is 6 feet 4 and not a small man width wise (but he is an excellent snuggler [and cook]) and does not fit in my Suzuki well. However, it has a 10 gallon tank that I fill once or twice a week... his Silverado on the other hand... gotta swipe your debit card again once you hit $75 so he crams into it without complaining. I think I'm lucky that he can't drive it (it's a manual transmission) or else he'd take it.

I had some 4 RIR hens earlier this year.Big birds, they layed daily even at 3-4 years old and foraged great. But the personalities sucked. They bullied everyone else even my roo and 2 attacked my 4 yr old son repeatedly. I had to arm him with a stick which they did learn to respect. Catching one( not sure who they looked alot alike) in the act of eating eggs was the last straw they had to go. I prefer New Hampshire reds, mine have much nicer attitudes, get almost as big,and lay just as well.

The Reds you are describing are Leghorn Hybrids.

Real ones look like this:








They are like big friendly dogs. None of mine have even raised their hackles at me.

These are from Horstman and Fogel, so they are Reese\mohawk and Kittle Straight Comb Reds--Reese goes back more than 90 years.
