The Old Folks Home

Yea, I've never been one to panic either. Of course I'm going to use precautions, washing hands and such. I just heard that 150 children died from regular influenza just in January but you didn't hear much about that on the airwaves. So I don't know.
The "regular" flu is pretty deadly, just it is old news, so no splashy media coverage

I think the issue is not necessarily with the death count, but the fact that none of us have any resistance to it. If we all get sick at once and need medical care all at once, especially at the critical level, there won't be enough staff or supplies to deal with it. What they are trying to do is slow down the rates of spread in order to be able to keep up and provide the best care when needed. We are like the forests here in CO and this is a wildfire and until there are openings and burnouts in the canopy, it is hard to get it stopped. They are trying to create safe zones around the most sensitive habitats (seniors) to divert the fire away from them. It can be a crapshoot with the best-laid plans because sometimes the bunnies catch on fire and bolt away, spreading the fire.

We stocked up on chicken and dog food here so we are good.

I need to tell y'all a true story that may put things in a different perspective for you concerning how virulent these viruses can be.

One day a person came into our office. Very nice people getting ready to go on vacation. Personnel and person were in a large room. I noticed the person sounded hoarse and casually asked if they were feeling okay. They said they felt like they were trying to catch a cold. DH and I exchanged glances and carried on.

When they left I looked at DH and said 'we are so s*****d'. Sure enough 48 hours later he was sick. 24 hours later so was I. It was H1N1. We were home, flat on our backs for 10 days. Business closed. All I remember is sitting on the edge of the bed coughing endlessly. My lungs and bronchials felt raw. The pain was intense. Nothing helped. I'm sure if I had gone to the doctor (I was too sick to go even to the ER) I would have been hospitalized with pneumonia. I finally wound up on steroids two months later to clear out the last of the inflammation. Doctor said I had asthmatic bronchitis.

There is no way I can risk getting this flu. Neither can DH.

Point is, it only takes breathing in some contagions without close contact to get sick. Hand sanitizing won't help that. Yes, I highly recommend wearing some sort of face mask if you are out in public. Better yet, don't be out in public if you can help it. It's the only way you can stop this type of contagion from spreading.

BTW I just got off the phone with the doctors office. I asked the nurse if they were getting a lot of calls from panicked people saying 'oh I'm sneezing, oh I'm coughing, omg I have the coronavirus' and she said, oh yeah, it's terrible..There is none in Kirksville not yet.

As for the yeast, I'm with @ronott1 and @penny1960 and others. I leave mine in a tightly sealed tupperwear container. Never had it go bad and I use a pound in about 5-6 months.

Take care everyone.

In Fact EXCELLENT Post!

My grandson's pediatrician is booked solid. No, we don't suspect covid-19, but he's congested, and has a nasty sounding cough. It's either bad allergies, a regular cold, or regular flu. Colds, and regular flu are still going around here. A lot of people are complaining of allergies, since the weather warmed up, and everything is greening up, and blooming. He can't get in to see the doctor until tomorrow.

We are going grocery shopping later tonight. We were going today, but with 1 kid sick, and after doing chores, it didn't leave enough time, before we have to pick up the other child from school. The other child's speech therapist already called to move the appointment up for today, after school. I don't want to wait until the weekend to go grocery shopping. Way too crowded.

Dd was telling me that quite a few of the older folks are wearing masks when out, and about. That's a good sign. I wish everyone could get them, and wear them. Not just for their own protection, but so they don't pass anything on to others. While there is controversy about the protection that masks afford the wearer, they do slow down the distance that aerosolized droplets can travel, when a person sneezes, or coughs, which helps those around them. It's much more customary to see people in Japan wearing masks, than here. It's not ingrained into our culture, like it is there.

The last time i was out without a mask was January 11th. No serious flu outbreak here at that point. Next time out was last month when I had the emergency dental appointment. Kinda hard to wear a mask there but not a busy office so I was safe. A week later I ventured out for a grocery run and masked up. When I went into the bank I just laughed and told the clerk, I'm not here to rob you, I just need to get a check cashed and don't want to spread anything or catch anything. They understood completely. I can only imagine how many people cough in there faces all day.

Allergies are terrible here. I get a lot of post nasal drip this time of the year from my allergies. Dust mites and mold gotta love em and the trouble is that you cannot control either.
