The Old Folks Home

I did that @CapricornFarm. Got 'maters and squash starting to come up. DH felled a red cedar for me two days ago. The one foot circumference trunk will help be part of my terrace retaining wall. Too wet. Also have plans for two above ground beds....too wet.....

I got a question for y'all. Can I safely use cedar boughs for shade screens in my run this summer? I know cedar fumes are bad for chickens lungs but will that carry over outside? Harvesting cedars and will have lots of branches that I can make shade screens for the birds with...IF they won't hurt them.
You can use cedar. Look it up but If I am remembering correctly, Eastern cedar is the bad one and that is for bedding.

The coop my Dad built when I was growing up was made from cedar wood

Got a Long rope where you can attach to tree and tractor (tractor up on solid land) ? And then back the tractor up enough to pull the trees off of the stuck part?
Dear Lord did that make any sense? lol
Yes it did, though one would want to pull with the rope/chain attached to the tow bar in the back where it won't screw up the hydraulic pistons on the loader.

Ticked more than two items off my checklist... Yay.
:yesss:
Deb I am so HAPPY that things are moving along so well :hugs

In all seriousness, while the ground is frozen can you get a loop of tow rope around the one that the trunk is hung up on the stump and then attach the tow rope to chains to get you a safe distance away from the trees? Use your tractor then to pull the one tree trunk off the stump. We've used up to 60 feet between tree and tractor using tow ropes and logging chains.
Aye, now there's the rub matey! "Frozen ground". I haven't got any. It MIGHT have been back before the 18" snow fall after which I couldn't run the tractor up and down the hills. Now that the snow is gone (OK, except for what it falling now) there is water running down the "trail" up into the woods. My guess it that there are some springs up there and the water, naturally, is taking the easiest path.

Back in the fall when I THOUGHT things were dry up there, I dug some nice foot plus deep ruts in the "trail". The low area between the pond behind the barn and the wetland north of it is wet most of the non winter time. I managed to make some not too deep ruts through that area yesterday morning even though it was 10°F overnight and 15°F when I went through it. I think I really need to dig a "French drain" through there.

Pulling with the 14' logging chain, two 30' tow straps and additional rope is likely the only way. Sure would be nice if I had a logging wench because it wouldn't be a straight pull and I'd need pulleys attached to trees which would have to be repositioned as the log moved along. Lots of off and back on the tractor, trudge back up the trail to get them out. They do make self releasing blocks for use with logging winches but they are EXPENSIVE, hundreds of $$. I'd probably have to start with the 14' logging chain and 200' stretchy anchor line to have the tractor starting on solid ground near the entrance from the field.

I think the issue is with cedar chips/shavings. I don't think cedar boughs would be a problem.

We had the first death from Coronavirus yesterday in Woodland.
We've had 4 die in a nursing home/rehab place down in Burlington. Based on the "can't specify due to privacy rules" information, I think it was brought in by a patient, probably asymptomatic. They are scrambling to get the non infected separated from those that are. 1 earlier death in another part of the state. All were elderly.

Funny! Thanks for the wench-ing explanation. I needed the laugh.

We just got a shock on the local news. A cancer doctor in Kirksville just tested positive for C-19. He had traveled to Africa with one of his nurses, returned, saw patients on Thursday and fell sick Thursday night. Can you imagine??? Oh my God those poor people is all I can say. That Genie will never get stuffed back into that bottle.

So for the moment, we have two active cases in Adair county. We are in Macon county, directly under us.
