The Old Folks Home

Cricket has become a little so-and-so since hitting puberty. He constantly stalks the babies and tries to mate with them when he has them cornered, at 3 months they are just a bit bigger then he is. He crows right in the face of danger (alpha rooster, Diego, my WLH) and flares up his hackles at anything that moves. The two big guys ignore him for the most part, though they will "dance" at him if he gets too "cocky," but they really don't seem to mind...they are too concerned with what each other is doing. He did get his tiny butt (funny...he doesn't have a butt) whooped by one of the big girls, Rosie (RSL) when he tried to mount her. She chased him halfway across the yard. As a bantam, will he be successful in his matings? Or will things just not line up correctly?
I know my young roosters are still trying to get the pecking order straight. They are funny! And some of my girls get on to the roosters also... I love it.
As far as your bantams, I have no idea. I don't have any and have never had any. Sorry. Hopefully some one on here can help you with that. Sorry

The world is a diverse and amazing place.

Because of the "sport" that is not to be mentioned on BYC, roosters are common place in the Philippines and prize roosters are status symbols. You can see a 5 acre lot with 200 A-frame shelters - each one is a rooster. The hens are the by-product of rooster production.

The whole country is alive with the sound of roosters yet I barely notice them once I am back there a few days.

We had no idea what Cricket was when we got him. He was a cull from a local breeder, given to us to keep Dottie company. After looking around BYC as he grew I now think he may be a bantam golden duckwing araucana. The stray sickles and lack of tufts is probably why he was not wanted by the breeder.

Just for fun..the dunn color. Not a deep chocolate. Very pretty little bantam cochin.

Pretty..to me.
Very pretty--- Dun is a horse color too.
I think I have learned enough about chickens to have a masters just from the hours of reading on line!! ALways more to learn . . . .

Quote: Mine start at 3 -- taking turns , calling out to see who will answer. Geeesh, don't they know we are trying to sleep?!?

Oh MY. He is the prettiest thing!! And so darn cute!

Mine wake me if they start to early, if they wait till 4-5 then it does not bother me. But 2 am! Come on birds, I need some sleep. j/s

He is a cutie just so tiny.

I can't wait to hatch eggs this spring to see if I get any crosses between Cricket and my hens. They are BO, RSL and WLH, with the 4 Buffies that are from my BO roostar and my BO and RSL hens. I ought to get soe interesting mixes.
