The Old Folks Home

Happy Father's Day!

It was nice earlier in the morning. Harvested half a bed of beets (1 bed left to harvest) and then converted the harvested bed into the cuke bed by installing trellises and planting seeds. Gleaned the beet greens for saute tonight, gave the chickens a whole mess o' greens, processed the teeny-weeny less-than-a-marble-sized beets in the Instant Pot for addition to salad tonight, cleaned the rest of the beets (large and mediums) for processing tomorrow (canning), and now that it's hot out, it might be a good time for a quick nap before the late afternoon watering and meal prep.

A hawk took out a young rabbit in the front driveway, so we've been avoiding that area of the yard so it can dine in peace. (We want to encourage pleasant experiences for our predators.) I did catch another pack rat but not before it severely topped all my peppers. The local growers on-line have assured me they'll grow back, but -- man -- they have A LOT of catching up to do.

DH and I are on different energy schedules. My best time is in the morning, but he sleeps in. Then I nap in the afternoon while he goes out for a sweat session in the yard. I like cool; he likes hot. I guess opposites attract?

Nice to see the hot air balloons back in the sky in the mornings.

Got an email blast about adoptable dogs from the greyhound rescue. Oh my! Norman's two half-sisters are on the roster and three of Selene's nieces plus her daughter are up for adoption. Sadly, we're at our max limit both in space and management of the pack. Adding any more and we're officially a circus.

A pic of the chicks in the coop.

Serama's like silkies have no resistence to Mareck's Disease-, My friend Arline lost her last 3 hens (2 seramas and one silkie) near the end of last year. She only let the silkie outside because it didn't fly (the seramas were good flyers). Well the silkie obviously brought the disease to the others. They each died, one day apart. She hasn't gotten any more since.

Her dog was very upset and looked all over for them.
