The Old Folks Home

Hello everyone! I received an invite from Wisher and thought I would jump in!

I sure am ready for spring....don't think I'll complain about the heat as much this summer.
Hello kingfrodo, Welcome to the OFH pull up a rocking chair and sit a spell.

let's see, I have a trio of EE and a mixed trio of Orpingtons. My roo is a Lavender Orp and his two ladies are buffs.

I just this past weekend bought 10 three week old chicks from Wisher. They will be any combo of: black Orps, EE daddy mixed with any variety of hen, Black Copper Maran, or milk man.

I am not too breed specific. I just like large fowl, colorful egg basket, and what ever looks pretty in the yard. Hence how I ended up with Wisher's EE roo.

I just kept saying how pretty he was and she gave him to me!

I have a waiting list of people at church and friends who want to buy my eggs but right now I might get one a day.

I hope when it warms up I can get more.

Quote: That is very cold for your area. brrrrr

We are running extra cold this week. Anything below 20 is abnormally cold here. At 20 I can still use outside faucets without resorting to a hairdrier to defrost the frostless faucets. lol

Gave buckets of warm water to the horses. My old mare ignored the bucket, of course, and pushed at her door until she was out ( into paddock) and then out gate to stacked hay bales. Biting snow and hay alternating. WHy argue? I filled a water bucket with snow, packed full and hung it in her stall. NOW she is happy: bite of hay , bite of snow . . .. bite of hay, bite of snow . . .

Woke up to frozen water dishes and a bunch of chickens still pressed against the run gate wanting out. I cleaned the dishes and added warm water, fed them and collected eggs. 5 eggs from my 5 big girls. Kewl. I did not let the Buffies out...just fed them, snuggled them and put them back in the baby coop.

Yes, We usually get a few nights below 20 so I can still use the outdoor faucets most of the time. If really cold weather is predicted I have some valves that I can isolate my outdoor faucets going down to the garden etc. Then I open the lowest faucet and the highest faucet and it drains the lines. It only takes a minute to close the faucets and open the valve and I have water for the chickens etc.

Quote: Nice system!!! Looks like you put some thought into the design!!

We use hoses to get water to the horses usually. At this time of year, the two are detached and pulled up the drive to drain after every use. Sometimes it is faster to just carrie buckets of water . . . and while I"m doing that I remind myself be glad I have a pump to bring up the water!!

Quote: When my grandmother made them it was always for breakfast, my mom would make them for breakfast or dinner. I did not care....I just loved when there were made. They always went fast. Talking about bacon grease my dad's mother use to keep bacon grease in a cleaned out coffee can and used it all the time. Pretty all of breakfast was fried in it except pancakes. That has been awhile ago when I was just a really small child.
