The Old Folks Home

Just catching up. It's been a treat to relive my childhood thru each of your stories about horses. I have loved horses with a passion since forever. Everything was horses as a kid. One of the first books I can remember having was a little paperback of all the breeds and the one photo of the silver arab stallion I still remember vividly. At 6 , I went to day camp 3 days a week learning to ride; then parents divorced, mother remarried and we moved. THe new neighbor had horses fall, winter and spring from a riding camp and I was allowed to ride. It was like heaven. Enough dirt roads and mowed fields to keep off paved roads and ride for hours.

At college I was thrilled to take riding lessons as an elective. ANd I took a couple classes with Dr Balch who ran the Morgan Horse Farm in Vt. He was a hoot! Great stories about showing and the mares and stallions. Morgans have remained a nostalgic favorite all these years. After college I worked as a vet tech for about 6 months, for a jerk of a vet; then went to work at a horse farm specializing in broodmares. That is where I met my first horse, Desert Eagle,at 3 months old- screaming for his mother. THe poor thing. Six months later the barn owner came out on a Sunday morning to the barn to tell me he was to be given away. Really?? I mulled it over while mucking stalls all morning. THen asked if I could have first refusal. Bought that colt for $1. I learned dressage with him; we rode in hunter paces, cruised the woods trail riding all alone. He was very reliable. I credit his breeding, ango-arab for his wonderful personality and hardiness. He's 25 now and king of the other horses. (I have a few). Along with sheep, chickens, and down to 2 dogs and 2 cats.

Guess we all have a lot in common.

Arielle, I think we need a picture of Desert Eagle

I've been reading this thread for a little while, but never posted until now.
Reading all your stories sound just like me! I grew up dreaming, drawing, and reading everything I could get about horses. Dad said NEVER on his property. I had friends with horses that I got to ride sometimes. My favorite was a fat little chestnut Quarter Horse named "Diamond's Revenge." He was 7 years old when he was bought for a 7-year-old girl's first horse.

He was green and spooked at almost anything, but he was fun to ride because he kept me on my toes! They sold him and bought a more appropriate horse for her. I am still waiting for my first horse at 34.

I am a stay-at-home Mom. I do love most animals-we raised Golden Retrievers for years, but no longer do. I love being outside, working in the garden or watching chickens! I also love to oil paint or pastels-although I don't get a chance to do it much anymore.

Glad you're finally posting and nice to meet you!

Thanks for thinking of me. I don't see any damage, but really haven't gone out to inspect. I didn't feel or hear it, so it wasn't bad in my opinion. BF did (we were sitting next to each other) but he thought the washer was misloaded, not an earthquake. So not severe at all.

I gotta go out soon and do the daily animal chores so I'll know for sure soon whether all's well - working 3 to 11 pm tonight. Most days I can barely stay up til 9 pm, so tonight is going to be fun. I did make myself stay up last night - good thing the debate was streaming, followed by some news - so I know I can do it tonight. Had strange dreams though last night - that melded the earthquake with thoughts from the debate. I hate it when that happens.

Did the earth open up and swallow them both in the dream? Maybe swallow all of DC? Just askin' LOL

It wasn't anywhere near that good.

In the dream we had an earthquake, and the earth opened up right outside my chicken coop pop door - this huge, deep crevice. Zombies were crawling up out of it. I ran out of ammo and left BF here shooting them while I went and bought an AK47 because it was still legal.

Well glad to hear that you had no damage and that the zombie apocalypse was only a dream ;-) One of my other friends from Maine posted a cute picture on FB this morning. The picture shows a round plastic table with four chairs around it. One of the chairs is tipped over on it's back on the ground. The caption to the picture is "We will rebuild" Thought it was pretty funny. :)
