The Old Folks Home

Pretty sure even with no access to grit, their food grinds itself. That gizzard is one strong muscle. I've never added grit. Free access to whatever most the year but right now frozen earth. I've never seen any probs.
I've never purchased grit either, first chickens 8.5 years ago. They do have a dirt run in the barn alley all winter and plenty of dirt with rocks during non frozen months. I guess they get enough "roughage" ;)

I think your neighbor New Hampshire is the Granite State. Lots of harder stone for the birds to get. Here all we have is sand so I do supply grit. I put it in the feeders now and then because I do give the birds treats of seeds and grains. I don't think they really need it otherwise. Also they can store the grit in their gizzards for awhile and don't need it every day but with it in the feeders they can take what they want. I have a lot of birds.

I did the big clean of the coops a couple of months ago while the birds were molting and before the pullets really started laying. I took a power washer from coop to coop. I did it on nice low humidity days so the coops would dry out good. I do need to refresh the litter in the coops. Christmas is going to be cold here, 40's during the day and 20's at night. No snow but I bet the frost on the ground will look white.

It is like that here too!

People crash their cars though
Here is East Texas it usually snows one or two days a winter- a few inches only. The entire city shuts down like we are hunkering for the apocalypse. If essential workers need to go to work- Nurses etc, they drive like crazy people, a lot end up on the side of the road sideways or in a ditch. The hospital I worked at sent security to pick people up and gave empty rooms to sleep in so the staff didn't have to drive in the "blizzard".

We've been having less and less snow the past few winters - maybe global warming???
This time the weather guys are saying mid-week and beyond, lows of 20F or less , with wind chills of -35F- I've got enough frigid weather clothes to cover a few female folks, if they are small enough to wear them.
