The Old Folks Home

Morning, everybody!

We had a pretty quiet 4th of July because we were exhausted. Working in a hot yard for the weekend will do that.

One of our projects was moving the broody coop (Barbie's condo) across the veggie compound to a shadier spot in the yard as we had taken down the nectarine tree near it. Also needed to clean and repair. We moved Barbie the broody Marans and two eggs into it yesterday afternoon and this morning removed said eggs from under her and snuck in two day-old incubator chicks. Barbie thinks she's a miracle worker genius able to hatch eggs in less than a day. LOL. She's not too bright, but a good mother. Last I heard from the broody coop was lots of chortling and low-clucks and there's no sound of screaming chicks in death throes, so we'll call that project a success. :)

The girls in the main coop are happy to have a full complement of nest boxes to deposit their eggs into; Barbie not getting picked on anymore for hogging the nest box.

We've been having monsoonal weather which makes things kind of muggy. In the evenings a nice breeze comes along and it's pleasant to be out. Last night we were fortunate that no actual rain fell, but there was a lightning storm that backlit the fireworks display at Balloon Fiesta Park. Our state locked down last 4th, so they doubled up on the pyrotechnics this year. We watched it (45 spectacular minutes worth!) from our backyard. We were not alone. The balmy weather was conducive to night activity and soon we were surrounded by a sea of toads who seemed unafraid and nonplussed by our presence. Maybe they thought we attracted bugs? Kind of surreal, but nice to know we've got a nighttime insect patrol in the backyard.

She should get better. Birds can regrow brain cells. It might take some time though
She must be regrowing brain cells as she keep making her way up to the computer desk and trying to read my email.. Nosy little thing. She's been roosting on a shortened shovel handle over the tub most of the afternoon.. Almost time for her to adventure around the living room. She does it about the same time every day. She's more stable now and nearly ready to go out with her brooder mate. Funny thing is, she's the largest of the bunch.

Hope you all had an excellent 4th. I spent the day mowing and washing and detailing the jeep. My favorite past time.

These weather people do realize this is FLORIDA, right? 20-30 mph with gust to 40 mph is a typical rain storm. Sheesh! The part in capital letters means, they won't admit to knowing it's not going to be bad, but want to scare the stew out of you.

@getaclue Sorry to hear about your little dove. Baby jay is in and out of the house all day, still sleeping on the ledge above the kitchen window. He comes in when he's hungry or want to take a birdie bath. I'm hoping he'll make the full time transition to outside. Cleaning poo is so crappy, especially when it's on my head. He loves doing touch and goes off my head when he comes in. I wonder if he's even bothering to look for food. Today's menu was egg salad with tuna in it, which he readily gulped down. Yesterday he got berries from a mixed berry cobbler I made. Doesn't seem to want wet chick started any more.

You can have him if you want. He can poop on your head. :celebrate Last week I failed to mention him to the nurse who came to check up on me and he was buzzing her.. I thought I might need a mop and a bucket after that one. My PT is so enamored with him. She had her cell phone out every time he landed on her head or shoulder. She mentioned that not only was I the most highly functional patient she has, but the most entertaining too. What can I say?

Yeah... I think they stick these things on automatic or some such?

We get the warnings sometimes too. And it is about as ridiculous (but of course snow storm, not hurricane). Because if you take the time to read the scary capital letters... it is just some snow and wind, like every other Thursday.

It is stupid to warn about normal stuff.... since then when a big storm does blow in, less people will pay attention to the warnings.
