The Old Folks Home

@CSolis, how are you feeling these days dear lady?

You are an inspiration.
Ohhhhhhhh, just like a 69 1/2 year old might feel. Some days are good, some not so good and some are just great. Finally able to bring in 50# bags of feed from the jeep again so strength is returning to normal. Now if I just had some get up and go I might get something done around here. After mowing and turning into a sopping mess, I came in, stripped to my undies and swept and mopped floors while I was cooling off.

I tried taking little Turtle Dove, my injured pullet back out to the turn out pen with her brood mates. Didn't go over so well. I'll have to wait until the cockerels leave before reintegrating her. There was one just picking on her to no end. But then she's comfy in the house and has a buddy.

BTW, Baby Jay chased me all over the place while I was mowing. Guess I'll forever be part of his world. That is unless and until he/she is old enough to find a mate. Things might change then.

You go girl! I love the picture of Gator with the pullet. Yes, she does have a buddy and I doubt if Gator would let anything touch her with less than friendly intentions.

I'm glad to see that she has recovered so well. They are remarkable little creatures aren't they?

My almost beat to death rooster, Swan is still in the broody buster cage in the beat up bachelor pen. I have one rooster in that coop (all have one blind eye) who has declared himself rooster in chief. I've tried turning Swan back out with the other boys who posture but don't make any moves towards him except for Boss Boy as I call him. I've spent over two weeks getting him healed back up. He's raising his head a bit now but I don't think he will ever be 'normal' as far as range of motion is concerned plus he is now a member of the one eyed rooster club.

It's grim but roosters really have a way of taking potential rivals out of the game. Just take out an eye and no more competition. That Game bird gene in my Amish Barnyard boys really stands out.

Do you think that the one that is picking on your girl is the one that did the original damage to her?

@getaclue it sounds as though you are as ready as you are going to be for the tropical storm/hurricane. Be safe. Prayers sent that mother nature is as kind to you and yours as she can be under such circumstances.

Went picked up the mail Costco wholesale sent me a 5 dollar credit card say Mcormicks seasoning weighed less than it should if our did we can return it .. looked at the steak seasoning it is full little used but bought it more than an month ago little confused I be

Where do you want me to go? Just kidding. Gator is the best buddy a chicken can have, especially an injured one. When he enters the room he walks up to Turtle Dove and the communicate nose to beak, as it were.

I'm getting rid of all the young cockerels as soon as they reach 10 weeks or so. Lady that was supposed to be here at 5 pm yesterday left a message at 8 pm she just realized she was supposed to be here at 5. Could she come today. I pm'd her back today with 'sure'. She said she be over shortly.. that was hours ago. She did the same last time. Only took her a week to finally show up. (Kids! Well, young couple from TX, no more sense that a goat)

I wondered about that little SOB picking on her when I saw him trying to dominate her today. It could have been that, but they are only 7 weeks old. He's a Bielefelder EE cross like she is. I'll have to take pics of the boys before they are gone. They have neat coloring and some have muffs too.

Ya know who else is fond of Gator? Little brat pecks at Gator's feet, and even grabs his ears for a tug of war. Today he finally decided meal worms were the cat's meow. One striking thing I've noticed with Baby Jay. His vocabulary totally changes when he's close to Gator, like he's telling some big story or something. With me it's just the average baby cry to be fed.

My dear that little jaybird is yours for life, you realize that don't you?

Seriously, he is not safe in the wild. He trusts humans. He trusts dogs. He has no clue that not all humans and dogs are as trustworthy and loving as you and Gator are. Jays are such smart birds. I've watched them at my feeders taking a single sunflower seed, wedging it in a crack in the platform and then pecking it open to get the meat from it.

Jay has bonded with you and Gator. Do you think he will ever find a mate to bond with?

I'd be out looking for a little girl chick for him and fixing them up an aviary. I'm an old softy and getting softer as I get older.

My son is of the same opinion that baby jay will stick around here forever, visiting as he wishes. He's spending more time outdoors than indoors, except when it's raining or he come in to roost at night. But, let nature and hormones take over and see what happens then. He'll be too busy feeding his mate, or sitting eggs, or if he is a she laying eggs and tending babies to remember.
Remember Price Charles was in the house with us for a month, but when hormones struck it was like he didn't remember us. Oh, he's polite as all get out to me and still likes to be hand fed, but his main concern is hens now.

to remember.

As it is with MOST teens.

That's like my little SDW OEGB rooster, Joker. He's busy in the spring trying to convince the small hens that he is all that and a bag of chips. But now that we are well into summer he's pecking my knees and wanting attention from his other mom.

His brood mom died when he was a little over 4 weeks old. Just went out one morning and found her dead. He was lost so I spent a lot of time with him, carried him around, hand fed him, made sure he had a safe place to sleep at night. He bonded with me as did Peanut, a little BBR hen who's mom hung around for 3 weeks after she hatched and then split. They both come to see me every night. Especially Peanut who will fly up and sit on my shoulder as I do chores, then hop down into the treat bucket to see what I left for her.

Of course there is always something left over.
