Huge copperhead was run over by a car (they backed up and run over it several times) then stopped to warn me they were out and about. They claimed it was a cotton mouth but the pattern didn't bear them out. Big even copper ovals on the back and copper head. I don't like venomous snakes at all.

I like wildlife and snakes in particular but when it comes to moccasins and copperheads, the markings I like to see on their back come from automobiles.

We have copper heads, water moccasins and timber rattlers here. I'm okay with non venomous snakes hanging around as long as they don't threaten us, the dogs, the cats or the chickens but if they do they are out of here. Venomous snakes? The good thing here is that all Missouri's venomous snakes have 'cat eyes' vertical pupils so you can clearly tell them from non venomous at a glance.

Afternoon all. DH and I went out last night evening and picked wild blackberries. They are just starting to get ripe and there is a bumper crop this year. I was glad he felt like being out with me. MOHS yesterday on his face. No need to tell you guys to make sure and wear your sun screen out there. We wound up with a good quart of berries. Hopefully the weather will let us pick every 48 hours.   The rooster coop is just trying to dry out. I would move them to my spare coop but frankly I don't want to go out and stand in ankle deep muck and pouring rain to feed and water them.
  
  
  @getaclue. We live in an area of ridges. Our house sits on top of a ridge that is lower than the ridge to the east and west. No sound travels. Neighbors a half a mile away say that they can hear our dogs when they howl but that is it.
  
  We are like you. We try to be good neighbors. But yeah, everybody makes noise every now and again.
  
  I remember living in the city and one day a neighbor came by and said he was throwing his daughter a graduation party on the next Saturday and he wanted to let everyone in the neighborhood know that there would probably be noise coming from his property as they were bringing in a band/dj the whole nine yards. Thought it was considerate of him to let everyone know and nobody minded. After all, your baby only graduates from high school once.

YAY, Today was Bandit's first day out free ranging with his 'gals'. Before I went out to feed I didn't see a one of them. But, Bandit came to see what I had, along with Twist. Dora, Dotty and Morena were already in the hoop coop waiting on treat time. Of course Baby Jay heckled me for treats too while I was out there. Life is good!

I can't agree more. It's just beyond me why the 'Creator' had to create them, they aren't good for anything that I can think of.. Foxes can do just as good a job eating field mice.

Feeling my age after hoeing in the heavy soil garden for about 5 hours today. I whacked the grass tops off, pulled some, and gathered it all up and got it out of there.

Still waiting for the tomatoes to start turning red. Something -- probably a deer -- ate the top off the jalapeno plant. It had flowers just about to blossom.

There are 4 mature oak trees we're going to have removed. DH is very competent with a chainsaw, but these are leaning over the house, and he wants no part to dealing with them, and I agree. It won't be cheap, but we've used these guys before on another big oak that was leaning over the house, and they were very good. They can't get a crane back here, so they'll be sending a climbing crew. I'll watch and take pictures like I did last time.

We did that when we had a team of brush cutters come in and beat back the timber that was wayyyyyy to close to the house for comfort. When they took down the biggest one, a dead standing oak. I couldn't watch. I came into the house and waited for the crash and things falling through the ceiling. Luckily, never happened.

DH told me I was safer outside. Told him I couldn't bear to watch.

Are you going to use the wood for firewood? Oak is VERY good firewood. Just under Locust and hickory.

Oh, yeah. This company will cut it to length. We'll stack it, let it sit for a year, then split it. We burn a lot of wood, and a lot of it is oak.

I might snag a couple of logs to put in the chicken run...

When they cleared around our house we asked them to pile the logs for us and they did. We forgot about all the good wood in the crowns though so they dozed them to the bottom of a ravine and mashed them down. Great erosion control but we look at that ruined wood 7 years later and shed a tear.

She came home at 3 PM and is fine. The Princess had to pick her up as I had an unexpected visit to the dentist.
