That and the potty song.

Ok, I posted this on the sick/ injuered thread but you guys always have the best advise so here goes.
Late last night a friend of mine showed up at my place with 3 hens. He rescued them from another friend who "just wanted them gone". The original owner had them in a 3 sided shed, no bedding, snow for water and only fed cracked corn.It has been -40 with heavy snow and high winds for the last week.
Aside from frostbite the leghorn and frizzle look pretty good but the white rock is in trouble. She gurgles loud when she breaths and gets exhausted very quickly. I think it is pneumonia. She is still eating, has good body weight and is even laying. I put her in a heated (40-45F) lighted (18hrs) coop with all the food and water she can ever want, but not sure what else to do for her. Any ideas or tips would be great.

Thanks

I think you got pretty good advice. I would personally reduce the lighting a bit to reduce her stress and up the protein in her food to 22 to 28%.

You are supposed to hold a quilting bee for the stipling.

Well that makes sense that the work would be shared!

Ditto!

I can not even imagine (me) attempting work like that.

Sure you could. It looks just like this:

Now just imagine Sparkles under your chair. Isn't that peaceful?

And DiDi - did I not get the picture right? Even down to the hair!

When I was in my single digits we use to listen to Wolfman Jack on WAMS AM station on Saturday nights. Anyone remember him? I was so naive, I thought he was local....LOL.

I like to start saying the word so old songs to my children sometimes. It often takes them a while to catch on.

62 in April.
I used to listen to my brother's (he's 72) albums on our Hi-Fi when he wasn't home and didn't know.
That's when I immersed myself into Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and The Platters.  Eclectic mix, don't you think?

I actually heard Ike and Tina Turner play several times a week in the summer. Across the street from my house in North St. Louis was The Club Imperial. No one had AC in the 50s and all the windows to the club and our house were open so it was like I was in there, just couldn't see them.
I did see them much later though.
Chuck Berry still plays about once a week in University City (St. L. burb).
Billy Peek once played guitar for Rod Stewart. He grew up across the street from Chuck Berry who taught him guitar. When Billy moved back to St. L. he would play at local clubs and Chuck Berry would always show up and jam to a few songs with Billy's band and do the duck walk.
Not bad for an 87 year old guy.
I saw Pink Floyd in 1993

I used to crank up the stereo to do housework and sing to it. lol

I am not crazy about huge crowds or noise where you cannot hear yourself talk. My concert attendance has been limited to the State Fair - Air Supply (when I was in high school), Gloria Estfan and The Miami Sound Machine, The Judds, Keith Urban, Willey Nelson, Brad Paisley and Blake Shelton, Darius Rucker and Chuck Wicks (his mom was a teacher in my high school) I only attend one larger concert which was Jimmy Buffet and though the music was great the attendees left alot to be desired. I am more of a radio/Pandora person. One band i would loved to have seen in concert is Queen.

I saw the Who, Temptations, Guess Who, Rush, Depeche ModeI cannot recall who else I saw.

Sounds like it's a combination of problems. Weak from no nutrition, adequate water and overcome by the cold.
You're on the right track but it wouldn't hurt to put her somewhere a little warmer. Healthy birds can take sub zero but a sick bird can benefit greatly from about 70F.

The problem is likely a combination of viral, fungal and bacterial but since she's knocked down so badly the antibiotics Pozees recommended will take care of secondary bacterial infection which she surely has by now.
Her body weight may be good because of the corn. Doesn't mean she's had much protein or vitamins/minerals though.

Chickens don't really get pneumonia but could be Chronic Respiratory Disease. Not many effective treatments but Tylan will help. If it is CRD, I think that is a reportable disease.
What are her droppings like?

Some plain yogurt will give protein and probiotics. She'll need them with antibiotics.
Crumbled hard boiled egg will give her a boost too.

Insanity I'd probably start the White Rock on some antibiotics and if you have Oxine and a nebulizing humidifier, put 2 Tbls of Oxine in a gallone of water and run it full blast right at her for 15 minutes as often as 4 times a day. For antibiotics try any of the tetracycline mixes, perhaps you have some Duramycin 10 or similar around or can get it at your feed store. Add vitamins to the water or give her a 1 cc dose of Poly Vi Sol (without iron) or Poultry Nutri Drench early morning and late afternoon.

I am not a vet or een close, just telling you what I would do.

Bless you for taking these poor birds in.

... Norah Jones is my favorite current singer and Etta James is my favorite Blues singer. Everytime a topic comes up I usually have a song for it . My grandchildren usually say uh-oh I knew that Papa had a song for it.

A couple of years ago the local PBS station played a John Denver concert he did shortly before he died....

Big John Denver fan here too. Love Annie's Song and Paradise.

OK, OK, twist my non-working arm, why don't ya.

It still needs to be trimmed (the dark blue layer is the last official layer), squared and bound. I have purchased the binding and will get to trimming as soon as my fingers work a little better.

Absolutely beautiful.

Wow, y'all have segued into a topic which neatly allows me to share a recent Pub experience of mine!

Back story: When the gals - individually - have to close up alone late at night and there are still customers on site who have been drinking, I often stay until closing, too. The (male) kitchen crew go off duty at 9 PM and don't always stay afterwards; weekday closing is at 11 PM. (Some times I am the ride home for one gal who lives quite close to me, sometimes I am just hanging out with some friends... Or solo.) I personally think women of ANY age should NOT be the only employee on duty at closing, for many reasons. I make sure whoever it is gets into her car safely before I depart. Besides, by now, all the Pub employees are my friends, anyway.

A few nights ago, several young local fellows showed up and settled in for some time. After awhile, there were no "older" folks there, except for me. They began to load up the Juke box with music to their liking. One of 'em came back to the bar and announced, "There are still credits if anybody wants to add songs."

I took that advantage. Added some selections by ZZTop, AC/DC, threw in some Genesis, two by Maroon5, something by Katy Perry, and finally "Brand New Rollerskates" by Melanie. (That's not the actual name of the songs, it might be "Brand New Key," but somebody in here will know which song I mean.) Back to my seat, smiling to myself.

A bit later, the first one in "my" queue began to play. The kid who had played the earlier ones looked around. Then he turned to me, gestured "Yours?" and I nodded. (The juke box gets its volume raised when the kitchen is closed and there are no more diners.)

He nodded and raised a thumb in approval. Two more songs played... He again asked if it was one of mine. Yup.

"[Dang,]" he said, "You're one bad-a* * old lady, Linda!" He was astounded when i told him I "was around" when all those songs FIRST came out and that I had even been to some of their concerts. He held out some dollar bills and gestured towards the Juke box.

Hehehehehe. I found some more classic rock, including Pink Floyd, and for sheer silliness, added in Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife."

He didn't know I had been designated Juke box lady by the 21 year old server who often spent her tips to load the juke box with stuff I like from many decades and a few genres. (I tip her very well those nights, because she really shouldn't have to give up her hard-earned money for me to play what I would have wanted to listen to, had I had cash on me at the time.)

One of these nights I will play '50s selections and we will do a Sock Hop. As a little "event" when nothing else is going on up around here.)

The juke box is connected to the Internet and down-loads songs so the range of music is amazing. However, I WISH I could get it to "find" anything by Gilbert & Sullivan, Rogers & Hammerstein.... Or...hehehehehe....Spike Jones.

Nevertheless, I am quite warmed to be considered a "BAOL" by the younger crowd.
Very cool.
I think it is brand new key, cheery song.

I'd go for 8 hours of light.

Wolfman Jack was on KXOK AM in the 60s, I didn't realize at the time that it was syndicated and thought it was coming from St. Louis.

I really hate crowds too, but it was a little different when I was in my teens and twenties.

X2 on Queen. I listened to a couple today.

Did you know that Queen was the only rock music allowed in Iran? It's because Freddie Mercury was Persian. I guess they chose to ignore the gay part.

Oh boy, look at what I am considering keeping. I have her here, a Great Dane. 4 months old. Blue Fawn in coloring. She is so laid back, just laying down beside me right now.

She is beautiful, and has a very kind face in profile at least. I'd be considering keeping her too!
