The Old Folks Home

This is so interesting to me. I am going to be 52 this month. I felt that I should have had the same exposure to the bands that Canoe has but now realize that there is a ten year difference, plus a huge difference in the geography. I grew up in a college town, but without any siblings that were close to my age. I am the youngest of four, but the closest in age is nearly 10 years older.

I was more influenced by my parents, who were much older than my friends' parents, growing up than by peers. I loved bluegrass because my grandfather played Gospel songs on the banjo and I would sit on the floor for hours and listen to him. He actually made banjos, and I have a couple that he made. When I heard bluegrass, I loved the banjo and came to appreciate the other instruments. Then, I was exposed to the music my parents liked, and learned to love that. That is the 40s and 50s stuff I like, as well as the big band stuff. I was also listening to 60s, 70s, and 80s pop and country. I pretty much missed completely the pop music of the 90s and 00s due to adult life, but now am getting some exposure to new music from my teens.

It is interesting to me that the music we like is so dependent on the environmental influences and circumstances we happen to be born into. Moxie was born the same year as me, in an area like Canoe, yet the music appreciation is completely different from either. Cool.

Alright, I have to ask, did anyone watch/listen to the video I posted of Fun.'s song "Some Nights!" I got no comments so I am not sure if you didn't check it out (which is okay, I didn't check out all of Canoe's links

) or if you were offended by the cuss word (understandable, it is a vile word,) or if it didn't affect you like it does me. Like SF9 said, it seems to somehow mirror my own internal rhythm's.
I'm the youngest of 4 also. My brother, the eldest, is 10 1/2 years older with 2 sisters in between.

We used to have some of those big 78 RPM records with 40s, 50s music.

I listened to it. I liked 'some nights'. Perhaps I don't comment as much as I should.
I think that's a woman thing. I realized when I joined BYC that it was mostly women. I really had to tone things down.

We had an amazing FM station back in the 60s. I think it was one of the first FM stations around our area. It was primarily rock&roll but they would also play other great music. That was my introduction to Blues, Reggae, Country Rock and obscure music like 'It's a Beautiful Day'. The station still exists and still plays pretty good music. Much 'of the same music they've always played. You can probably stream it, KSHE. They play a lot of current music but you'll still get the occasional B.B. King, Zager And Evans - 'In The Year 2525' or J. D. Blackfoot - the 'Legend of Crazy Horse'.

The links are just for a day when you want to hear some good music and can't do anything outside.

I know, right? I once again shocked and amazed one of my sons (the 14 year old) by suddenly breaking out in song. Now, I do that often, and they are used to it, but this time it was the full version, every word, acapella, of Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby," the only rap song I know by heart. My son was confused and speechless!

Now, I couldn't name one song that Vanilla Ice (?) does? .....and know very few of the modern artists work. Modern meaning.....60's rock and onward. I did get to listen to a fresh version of reggae when we were in Cuba, but they didn't call it reggae. I also like artists such as Lorenna McKinnet, the Scottish Pipe and Drums, Buddhist chants, some really good Nepalese artists, and quite a few others from World Music. Oh, and for jazz and blues, Eva Cassidy can't be beat. Also, all the older ones, Eartha Kitt, Ella Fitzgerald, Brook Benton and Dinah Washington, Ray Charles......and so many many others. .............

Also, FWIW...I am the youngest of 3 daughters. My oldest sister being born in 1950...my other sister being born in 1961. I tend to forge my own path in the world, so they think me the "Black Sheep" of the family.

Ok, I posted this on the sick/ injuered thread but you guys always have the best advise so here goes.
Late last night a friend of mine showed up at my place with 3 hens. He rescued them from another friend who "just wanted them gone". The original owner had them in a 3 sided shed, no bedding, snow for water and only fed cracked corn.It has been -40 with heavy snow and high winds for the last week.
Aside from frostbite the leghorn and frizzle look pretty good but the white rock is in trouble. She gurgles loud when she breaths and gets exhausted very quickly. I think it is pneumonia. She is still eating, has good body weight and is even laying. I put her in a heated (40-45F) lighted (18hrs) coop with all the food and water she can ever want, but not sure what else to do for her. Any ideas or tips would be great.

Thanks

The only artist I truly regret never seeing is Stevie Ray Vaughan. I was old enough to go see him before he died in a helicopter crash in 1990 but I didn't know of him back then. DH introduced me to his music and I would give my eye teeth to see him live. Kenny Wayne Shepard is about as close as you can get to him (IMO) these days and we did go see him in concert a few years ago in SLC. They had to end the concert early because it was an outdoor venue and there was a thunderstorm in the area. Wisher I think what your parents and peers listen to definitely can affect what you like to listen to. We grew up listening to Sonny & Cher, John Denver and the Beatles so I gravitated toward "quieter" music such as Elton John and Billy Joel (both great in concert!). One band I highly recommend to anyone who loves the Motown sound is Human Nature. They are an Aussie band that does a lot of the Motown songs promoted by Smokey himself. We saw them a few years ago in Vegas and it was the best money I spent all weekend we were down there. Not sure if they are still there but boy are they good. They do an a cappella version of Ooh Baby Baby that is just amazing.

Insanity I'd probably start the White Rock on some antibiotics and if you have Oxine and a nebulizing humidifier, put 2 Tbls of Oxine in a gallone of water and run it full blast right at her for 15 minutes as often as 4 times a day. For antibiotics try any of the tetracycline mixes, perhaps you have some Duramycin 10 or similar around or can get it at your feed store. Add vitamins to the water or give her a 1 cc dose of Poly Vi Sol (without iron) or Poultry Nutri Drench early morning and late afternoon.

I am not a vet or een close, just telling you what I would do.

Bless you for taking these poor birds in.

Oz - I saw Tony Bennett too! Summer of 1991, at the New York State Fair, it was blazing hot and he and his band wore their tuxedos throughout the show.
