Can somebody just explain a monitor roof to me? I read the first page of the thread linked, but am no wiser ... I feel like I need a picture.
When I googled it came up with 2 kinds:

This kind I usually see on super expensive horse barns. The raised part cam also be the entire length of the building.

But this kind, raised only on one side, is more common in chicken coops.

A version of the one below is used in the Woods design/open air poultry housing.

The second picture is what is called a "clerestory" (pronounced "clear story") roof line. 3KillerBs did that on her new coop. If you haven't seen that thread:

This page has picture of it when it's nearly done. Really nice.

The great thing about the monitor is there is a lot of venting at the top, where it does the most good. I'm going to cover the run with clear polycarbonate panels, so I need some good vents. I will need shade cloth in the summer, that's for sure.

My goal was a nice, dry run. I used heavy duty tarps last winter, and it was kind of gloomy in there. Not sure if that's why my Australorps took their first winter off from laying...
